At DigitalOcean, we simplify cloud infrastructure to empower developers to focus on creating impactful software. Our goal is to optimize the effective utilization of DigitalOcean's server fleet while continuously enhancing the management and operation of that fleet. Beyond our mission, we prioritize cultivating diverse interests among our team members.

At DigitalOcean, we are committed to establishing simple, yet robust, foundations (with care) from which our community can innovate. The Fleet Optimization Engineering team embodies this mission by developing a scalable, reliable, efficient, and secure platform foundation that underpins all DigitalOcean offerings.

Our Technology Stack: Golang, Linux, Kubernetes, Bash, LibVirt, KVM, Python, MySQL

Our Tools: GitHub, GitHub Actions, Bash, Jira, Slack, Grafana, Victoria Metrics, GSuite

Our Team: The individual in this role will report to the manager of the Fleet Optimization Engineering team, overseeing the Fleet Data initiative. Currently, three diverse engineers support the Fleet Data mission, located across various regions.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Leading the design and development of our scalable and distributed data services.
  • Creating scripts, tools, and automation solutions to optimize virtualization processes, enhance system performance, and boost operational efficiency.
  • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, system administrators, and network engineers, to diagnose issues, implement solutions, and enhance virtualized environments. Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach are essential.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest advancements in Linux virtualization technologies and industry best practices. Proactively identifying areas for improvement and implementing innovative solutions.
  • Diagnosing and resolving intricate technical challenges related to Linux virtualization infrastructure in a timely manner. Utilizing analytical skills and creativity to effectively tackle challenges.
What We Expect From You:
  • A proven history of successfully developing, deploying, and managing distributed systems that operate at scale.
  • Expertise in scripting and automation using languages such as Bash, Python, or Perl.
  • Extensive experience with Linux-based virtualization technologies (KVM, Xen, Docker, LXC, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with a proactive and analytical approach to troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the capability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • A passion for continuous learning and innovation, with a keen interest in exploring new technologies and challenges.
  • Experience in mentoring junior engineers.
Why You Will Appreciate Working at DigitalOcean:
  • We recognize our employees. The compensation range for this position is between $175,000 and $205,000, depending on relevant experience and skills. Employees may also qualify for a performance-based bonus, and we offer equity compensation to eligible employees, including equity grants upon hire and participation in our Employee Stock Purchase Program.
  • We prioritize professional growth. You will collaborate with some of the brightest and most engaging individuals in the industry. We are a high-performance organization that continuously challenges our teams and employees to evolve. We maintain a growth mindset in all our endeavors and invest significantly in employee development through structured mentorship and other internal programs. We provide reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
  • We care about your well-being. In addition to competitive cash and equity compensation, we offer a comprehensive benefits package. In the United States, this includes health insurance, unlimited vacation, retirement benefits, a generous parental leave program, and additional resources to support employees' overall well-being. While our benefits philosophy is consistent globally, specific offerings may vary in other countries due to local regulations and preferences.
  • We value diversity and inclusivity. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
