Veterinary Nursing Specialist for Avian and Exotic Species

The University of Tennessee is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Veterinary Nursing Specialist within the Avian and Exotic division of the Small Animal Clinical Sciences department. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about providing essential medical, surgical, and anesthetic nursing care, as well as diagnostic imaging services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial patient assessments and perform triage to prepare animals for examinations or treatments.
  • Execute prescribed diagnostic procedures and interpret results accurately.
  • Document patients' medical histories, symptoms, and observations meticulously.
  • Administer medications and treatments as per established protocols.
  • Collaborate with veterinary professionals to develop and implement care plans.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervising veterinarians.
  • Utilize and manage medical equipment effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Handle patient accounts and enter charges accurately.
  • Oversee inventory management of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in the education of students, interns, and residents in clinical practices relevant to the specialty.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fundamental understanding of veterinary medical principles.
  • Familiarity with animal behavior and husbandry practices.
  • Knowledge of sterilization and disinfection techniques.
  • Capability to perform life-saving resuscitation procedures.
  • Proficiency in conducting diagnostic assessments.
  • Adherence to safety protocols within a clinical environment.
  • Ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
  • Competence in calculating dosages and administering medications.
  • Skills in obtaining and interpreting patient vital signs.
  • Professional demeanor and strong communication abilities.
  • Effective time management skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree. Upcoming graduates are encouraged to apply, provided they obtain their degree before the start date.
  • Licensure to practice in the state of Tennessee must be achieved within the first year of employment.

The Veterinary Medical Center operates continuously, and candidates should be prepared for potential weekend, evening, or holiday shifts as required.
