Avian and Exotic Animal Veterinary Nurse

The University of Tennessee is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Avian and Exotic Animal Veterinary Nurse within the Small Animal Clinical Sciences department. This position is essential for delivering foundational medical, surgical, and anesthetic nursing care, as well as diagnostic imaging services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patient assessments and perform triage to prepare animals for examinations or treatments.
  • Execute prescribed diagnostic procedures and analyze the results effectively.
  • Document patients' medical histories, symptoms, and observations accurately.
  • Administer medications and treatments as per established protocols.
  • Collaborate with pet owners to develop a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervising clinicians regarding patient status.
  • Operate and manage medical equipment efficiently.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Manage patient account charges and maintain accurate records.
  • Oversee supplies, equipment, and inventory management.
  • Assist in the training of students, interns, and residents in clinical skills relevant to the specialty.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of veterinary medical principles.
  • Familiarity with animal behavior and husbandry practices.
  • Knowledge of sanitation and disinfection protocols.
  • Ability to perform resuscitation techniques when necessary.
  • Competence in conducting diagnostic procedures.
  • Adherence to safety procedures within the clinical environment.
  • Capability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in calculating dosages and administering medications.
  • Skills in obtaining and interpreting patient statistics.
  • Professional demeanor and effective communication skills.
  • Strong time management abilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree. Candidates nearing graduation will also be considered, provided they complete their degree prior to employment.
  • Licensure to practice in Tennessee must be obtained within the first year of employment.

The Veterinary Medical Center operates continuously, requiring flexibility for occasional weekend, evening, or holiday shifts.
