Must be capable of conducting fieldwork under various conditions. Proficiency in handling sampling equipment for field operations is essential (e.g., during trawling - manually retrieving sampling gear, managing sampling buckets on and off the vessel, transporting necessary supplies to and from the vessel and/or vehicle, etc.). A US Coast Guard Master-Near Coastal license, 100 tons or more, with the ability to carry passengers is mandatory to comply with US Coast Guard regulations and State liability standards. Formal training in first aid and CPR is required. Experience in conducting bottom trawl fishing as a Captain is essential. Preferred Qualifications:
A Master's degree (or equivalent) is preferred. Previous at-sea experience on an oceanographic research vessel is advantageous. Familiarity with Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound, the Mid-Atlantic Bight beyond the continental shelf break, New York Harbor, coastal waters of New Jersey, and the Hudson River is beneficial. Experience in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and other mechanical/electrical systems, as well as operation of onboard oceanographic equipment, is desirable. Additional years (3+) of experience as a vessel master are preferred.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Chief Research Vessel Operator is accountable for all facets of the R/V Seawolf's operations and upkeep at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University. This role primarily involves operating the R/V Seawolf, but may occasionally require assistance with the operation of other smaller vessels within SoMAS. The Captain is supported by full-time technicians and additional crew members as necessary (including temporary deckhands or student hires). The Captain is responsible for the safe operation of the research vessel R/V Seawolf, ensuring its maintenance, and effectively supporting the School's need for a platform to conduct research and educational activities at sea. The Captain will lead multiple cruises that involve top and bottom trawling. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, demonstrating strong organizational and time-management abilities with exceptional attention to detail. It is essential for this role to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team to solve problems.

Duties:
  • Captain:

Conduct bottom trawling and other research activities in a manner that respects habitat and marine life conservation. Maintain logs of all vessel activities and submit daily Captain's reports to SoMAS Port Captain and, as necessary, other SoMAS personnel. Present a friendly and collegial demeanor to all clients and onboard parties.
  • General Vessel Operations:
    • Oversee the safe operation of shipboard scientific equipment, instrumentation, and sampling apparatus, as well as shop machinery and tools. Familiarize R/V Seawolf users with at-sea safety policies, procedures, and equipment. Coordinate with the Port Captain to arrange for the vessel's berthing, both at home port and at remote locations. In collaboration with the Port Captain, ensure appropriate stocking of supplies and fuel. Ensure proper personal safety and care of equipment by vessel and scientific personnel. Provide assistance or assume duties of SoMAS small vessel operation as needed. Operate/drive SoMAS trucks, vans, and forklifts as necessary to transport vessels, crew, and gear.
  • Repair and Maintenance:
    • Inspect and perform at-sea operational maintenance and repairs of the vessel, including engines, hydraulics, AC/DC electrical systems, potable and black water systems, air compressors, etc. Perform and/or oversee operational maintenance in port as time permits, including scraping and painting, repair, servicing, and inspection of the R/V Seawolf, engines, electrical systems, smaller vessel fleet, and work trailers. Repair damaged trawl nets and tow cables. Train Deckhands and other ship's personnel in the operation of equipment, shop machinery, and tools with regard to personal safety and care of equipment. Supervise and inspect all shipyard repair and maintenance work (requires in-person oversight at shipyard).
  • Supervision and Training:
    • Responsible for training and supervising full-time technicians, temporary deckhands, and student crew during at-sea operations and maintenance efforts.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
