Stony Brook, New York, United States Stony Brook University Full time
Job Overview - Postdoctoral Associate

Position Title: Postdoctoral Associate

Essential Qualifications:
(as evidenced by an attached resume)

Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline by the start of the appointment.

Experience in crystallography is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

Candidates should possess a robust background in quantitative structure analysis utilizing X-ray (or neutron) scattering data, including powder diffraction, pair distribution function (PDF), and single-crystal techniques. Experience with in situ/operando characterization and large-scale user facilities such as synchrotrons is highly valued.

Familiarity with the characterization and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks or other crystalline porous materials is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Associate will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Karena Chapman.

The incumbent will engage in research activities and ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.

The role involves investigating the structure-function relationships in metal-organic framework materials aimed at energy-related applications, including CO2 capture and catalysis.

We seek a motivated and innovative individual interested in developing a mechanistic understanding of the function and performance of energy-relevant materials through X-ray crystallography.

Candidates should be keen on employing advanced X-ray scattering analysis (PDF, pXRD) to explore fundamental aspects of structure-reactivity relationships.

We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds, provided they have a strong interest in acquiring skills related to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

The postdoctoral fellow should demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, strong problem-solving capabilities, and a willingness to mentor junior laboratory members.

Regular Duties Include:

Conducting research experiments focused on the characterization of functional metal-organic framework materials within the defined research scope and methodology.

Performing X-ray scattering experiments on metal-organic frameworks under reactive conditions using both synchrotron and laboratory-based instruments.

Executing quantitative structural analysis based on powder diffraction and pair distribution function data.

Contributing to manuscript preparation for publication in scientific journals and presentations.

Maintaining laboratory operations, including equipment upkeep and supply ordering as necessary.

Providing mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students.

Collecting and analyzing data, conducting literature reviews, and utilizing specialized skills in related fields for data analysis.

Other responsibilities as assigned, which may involve attending scientific conferences and meetings.

Additional Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY operates as a private educational corporation. Employment is contingent upon adherence to Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines, and funding availability. This position is classified as FLSA Exempt and is not eligible for overtime provisions. A minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Applicants should include a resume/CV and cover letter with their online application.
