Position Overview:

The Postdoctoral Associate will work under the guidance of Dr. Karena Chapman, contributing to cutting-edge research in the field of materials science.

Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline is required by the commencement of the appointment.

Proven experience in crystallography is essential.

Desirable Qualifications:


Candidates should possess a robust background in quantitative structure analysis utilizing X-ray (or neutron) scattering data, including techniques such as powder diffraction, pair distribution function (PDF), and single-crystal analysis. Experience with in situ/operando characterization and large-scale user facilities like synchrotrons is highly preferred.

Familiarity with the characterization and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks or other crystalline porous materials is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Associate will engage in research activities to elucidate the structure-function relationships in metal-organic framework materials, particularly for applications in CO2 capture and catalysis.

We seek a highly motivated and innovative individual eager to develop a mechanistic understanding of energy-relevant materials through X-ray crystallography.

Candidates should be enthusiastic about employing advanced X-ray scattering analysis (PDF, pXRD) to investigate fundamental aspects of structure-reactivity relationships.

We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds, provided they demonstrate a willingness to acquire skills in working with metal-organic frameworks.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills in English, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, excellent problem-solving capabilities, and a commitment to mentoring junior lab members.


Regular Duties Include:


Conducting research experiments focused on the characterization of functional metal-organic framework materials within the established research framework.

Performing X-ray scattering experiments under reactive conditions using both synchrotron and laboratory-based instruments.

Executing quantitative structural analyses based on powder diffraction and pair distribution function data.

Contributing to manuscript preparation for publication in scientific journals and presentations.

Maintaining laboratory operations, including equipment upkeep and supply management.

Providing mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students.

Collecting and analyzing data, including conducting literature reviews and applying specialized skills to interpret findings.

Other responsibilities as assigned, which may involve participation in scientific conferences and meetings.

Additional Information:
The Research Foundation of SUNY operates as a private educational corporation. Employment is contingent upon adherence to Research Foundation policies, sponsor guidelines, and funding availability. This position is classified as FLSA Exempt, not eligible for overtime provisions. The minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
