Overview:
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, the Patient Care Assistant aids patients with their daily living activities and implements care plans. This role involves effective communication and support for the healthcare team, patients, and their families, while upholding high standards of professional ethics.

Key Responsibilities:

- Assist patients with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, feeding, toileting, and mobility support.
- Adhere to standard precautions, including care for patients in isolation and ensuring safe patient practices.

- Execute technical tasks as instructed by RN/LPN, including monitoring vital signs, conducting point-of-care tests, performing bladder scans, and managing foley catheter care relevant to the patient population, while documenting all actions accurately. Phlebotomy and EKG procedures may be performed if certified.
- Recognize and report any changes in a patient's condition to the RN/LPN and respond appropriately. Maintain adherence to standard precautions and safe patient practices.

- Educate patients and their families or responsible parties about individual care requirements and safety considerations.

- Engage in initiatives aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction and achieving organizational goals.

- Contribute to performance improvement efforts within the department.

- Assist in the orientation and training of new staff members.

Required Qualifications:

- Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental patient care skills, procedures, and standards.
- Strong communication abilities are essential.

Educational Requirements:

- A High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) is mandatory.

- Completion of a Patient Care Technician course, a fundamentals nursing course within an RN program, a Certified Nursing Assistant program, or equivalent experience of at least one year in direct patient care is required.

Certifications and Training:

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

- Phlebotomy training is necessary for positions within the Emergency Department.

- Continuous skill enhancement through ongoing education and training is expected, along with maintaining compliance with regulatory and departmental competencies.
