Short Description

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Care Associate assists with patients' daily living activities and care plans.

They communicate effectively with and support the healthcare team, patients, and/or their families or significant others.

They uphold and demonstrate high standards of professional ethics.

  • Assists with daily living activities including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, feeding, toileting, and mobility support. Ensures adherence to standard precautions, particularly in the care of isolated patients and safe patient practices.
  • Performs technical tasks as directed by the RN, such as phlebotomy, monitoring vital signs, conducting point-of-care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care relevant to the patient population, while documenting appropriately.
  • Identifies and reports changes in patient status to the RN and responds appropriately. Maintains standard precautions, especially for isolated patients and safe practices.
  • Reinforces education for patients and families regarding individual care needs and safety considerations.
  • Participates in patient satisfaction initiatives and performance improvement activities. Aids in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by the designated deadline.
  • Attends staff meetings when possible to review meeting minutes.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes of patients within the unit.
Experience Required

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an unlicensed healthcare provider/technician program.
  • Completion of at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN program.
  • A minimum of one year of patient care experience in a similar role.
At least one of the above qualifications must be met for employment.

Skills

  • Communication - Ability to effectively interact with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Successful completion of phlebotomy/EKG competency during orientation is required.
Education Requirements

High School / GED

License/Certification Requirements

AHA Basic Life Support certification - required.
