Position Overview: Associate Environmental Engineer

As an Associate Environmental Engineer within the Safe Drinking Water Section, you will be integral in delivering technical and operational support by conducting site assessments and working alongside public water systems. Your role will encompass training and guiding SDW personnel on the installation of water systems to ensure adherence to regulations. You will also represent the Safe Drinking Water Section in the Operator Certification Program, engaging in training sessions and facilitating discussions on pertinent topics. Furthermore, you will evaluate intricate engineering and design plans to assist with permitting requirements as part of our Technical Assistance initiative. Expertise in water treatment engineering, design, and operations will be essential for the successful candidate, along with a commitment to exceptional customer service and mentoring of internal staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze data reports, engineering design documents, and technical submissions
  • Conduct site evaluations and address compliance challenges with public water systems
  • Provide technical support to ensure adherence to regulatory standards
  • Advise staff and facilities based on technical assessments
  • Assist in the development of engineering guidance materials
  • Mentor junior staff
  • Draft engineering memoranda and other technical documentation for permits
  • Interpret relevant regulations associated with the Safe Drinking Water Act

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in working independently and collaboratively
  • Familiarity with civil or environmental engineering principles and environmental regulations
  • Understanding of agency policies and decision-making processes
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication abilities
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Adept at managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Skilled in interpreting environmental laws and regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or a related discipline
  • ADEQ Grades 3 or 4 Operator Certification in Water Treatment or Distribution
  • Professional Engineer certification from the Arizona Board of Technical Registration
  • Engineer-in-Training or equivalent certification for level 3 candidates
  • Preferred: Grade 4 Operator Certification in Treatment & Distribution Systems
  • Preferred: 5 years of experience in managing water treatment facilities or public water systems

Pre-Employment Requirements:

For positions requiring driving, candidates must meet state vehicle operation standards.
