Position Overview: Associate Environmental Engineer

As an Associate Environmental Engineer within the Safe Drinking Water Section, you will be instrumental in delivering technical and operational support by performing site evaluations and working closely with public water systems. Your role will encompass training and guiding staff on the installation of water systems to ensure adherence to regulations. You will also represent the Safe Drinking Water Section in the Operator Certification Program, facilitating training sessions and leading discussions on pertinent topics. Additionally, you will assess complex engineering and design proposals to assist with permitting needs as part of our Technical Assistance initiative. A strong foundation in water treatment engineering, design, and operations will be essential for success in this position, along with a commitment to providing exceptional customer service and mentoring team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze data reports, engineering design documents, and technical submissions
  • Conduct site inspections and address compliance challenges with public water systems
  • Deliver technical support to ensure adherence to regulatory standards
  • Provide expert guidance to staff and facilities based on technical evaluations
  • Contribute to the development of engineering guidance materials
  • Mentor junior staff
  • Draft engineering memoranda and other technical documentation for permits
  • Interpret applicable regulations related to the Safe Drinking Water Act

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in working independently and collaboratively within teams
  • Familiarity with civil or environmental engineering principles and environmental regulations
  • Understanding of agency policies and processes for decision-making
  • Exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with attention to detail
  • Adept at managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Skilled in interpreting environmental laws and regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or a related discipline
  • ADEQ Grades 3 or 4 Operator Certification in Water Treatment or Distribution
  • Professional Engineer certification from the Arizona Board of Technical Registration
  • Engineer-in-Training or equivalent certification for level 3 candidates
  • Preferred: Grade 4 Operator Certification in Treatment & Distribution Systems
  • Preferred: 5 years of experience in managing water treatment facilities or public water systems

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Compliance with state vehicle operation standards is necessary if driving is a requirement for this role.
