Chicago, Illinois, United States Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Full time

Position Title: Director of Housing Justice

Reports to: Vice President of Advocacy

Location: Chicago, IL

The Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County is dedicated to promoting racial and economic equity. Our mission encompasses legal advocacy, policy development, and the facilitation of collaborative networks among legal professionals, community advocates, and activists to foster opportunities for all individuals.

Our legal system is often shaped by regulations and policies that perpetuate inequality among various demographics. We assert that laws and policies, along with the institutions that enforce them, should empower individuals. Together, we are committed to transforming this vision into a tangible reality.

We aspire to create a society where every individual, family, and future generation is afforded equal dignity, respect, and authority under the law.

Position Overview: The Clerk of the Circuit Court is seeking a Director of Housing Justice to lead strategic initiatives aimed at promoting equitable housing legislation and policies. This role will adopt a community-focused methodology to ensure that marginalized populations, including those experiencing poverty and communities of color, have access to safe, decent, and affordable housing.

The Director will work towards dismantling systemic barriers that perpetuate racial segregation and adverse outcomes for diverse communities, including those engaged with the criminal justice system. This position will involve local advocacy within Illinois and participation in national initiatives through established networks. The Director will facilitate collaborations and manage projects with various stakeholders at local, state, and national levels. As part of coordinated advocacy efforts, the Director will contribute to litigation, legislative, and administrative strategies, while also gathering and analyzing data to assess progress and inform program modifications.

Key Responsibilities:

· Provide strategic oversight and direction for housing law and policy initiatives by developing and implementing comprehensive strategies and objectives.
· Mentor and supervise legal staff, program associates, interns, and volunteers to equip them with the skills necessary to further the housing justice agenda.
· Foster and maintain relationships with existing and prospective partners, representing the organization in coalitions, working groups, and task forces.
· Lead advocacy efforts on housing justice issues at various levels, ensuring community engagement and input.
· Engage in systemic litigation and represent clients as appropriate, in consultation with the Vice President of Advocacy.
· Collaborate with the Communications team to execute media and public relations strategies that support advocacy goals, potentially serving as a spokesperson when required.
· Work alongside multi-state networks and local, state, and national allies to advance the housing justice agenda.
· Act as a strategic partner to the development team in fundraising initiatives for housing justice programs, including grant writing and budget management.
· Partner with the training team to facilitate educational opportunities for advocates.
· Assess the performance of the housing justice team in alignment with organizational objectives.
· Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· Juris Doctorate with a minimum of 7 years of legal practice experience.
· At least 2 years of experience in supervising staff, including recruitment, performance feedback, and evaluations.
· Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Chicago metropolitan area.
· Expertise in public and assisted housing programs, fair housing, tenant rights, and related advocacy.
· Proven commitment to and success in advancing advocacy initiatives on legal and policy matters affecting low-income individuals and communities of color, including experience in litigation and lobbying.
· Experience in managing and motivating diverse teams.
· Ability to collaborate effectively while holding team members accountable.
· Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills, capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
· Willingness to travel as necessary (approximately 20%).
· Experience in complex litigation is highly desirable.
· Multilingual abilities are advantageous but not mandatory.

This list of qualifications outlines the ideal candidate profile. We recognize that these qualifications can be acquired through education, professional experience, and/or personal experiences, and we encourage all interested candidates to consider applying.

Salary/Benefits: This full-time position offers a competitive salary range and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, generous paid leave, flexible work arrangements, pre-tax spending accounts, commuter benefits, and a retirement plan.

Applications: Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume with the subject line "Director of Housing Justice application" for consideration.

At the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, we value a diverse workforce and believe that a mix of backgrounds and experiences enhances our effectiveness.
