Reports to: Vice President of Advocacy

Location: Chicago, IL

The Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County is dedicated to promoting fairness and equity in housing. Our mission is to address systemic inequalities through legal action, policy reform, and community engagement. We have a long-standing commitment to ensuring that all individuals have access to safe and affordable housing, particularly those from marginalized communities.

We recognize that laws and policies often perpetuate disparities based on race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Our goal is to transform these systems to better serve all members of the community.

Position Overview: We are seeking a Director of Housing Justice to lead our initiatives aimed at fostering equitable housing laws and practices. This role will emphasize a community-focused approach, ensuring that those affected by poverty and discrimination have access to adequate housing.

The Director will work to challenge and dismantle the frameworks that contribute to racial segregation and inequitable outcomes for diverse communities. This position will involve collaboration at both local and national levels, engaging with various networks and stakeholders. The Director will also play a crucial role in multi-state advocacy efforts, contributing to litigation and legislative strategies while assessing program effectiveness through data collection.

Key Responsibilities:

· Provide strategic direction and leadership for housing law and policy initiatives, developing actionable plans and objectives.
· Mentor and supervise a team of legal professionals and advocates, ensuring they are equipped to advance our housing justice mission.
· Foster partnerships with local, state, and national organizations, representing our interests in coalitions and advocacy groups.
· Drive the policy agenda on housing justice, ensuring community input is central to our approach.
· Engage in systemic litigation and represent clients as needed, in consultation with leadership.
· Collaborate with the Communications team to promote our advocacy efforts through media outreach and public relations.
· Work alongside various networks to bolster our housing justice initiatives.
· Assist in fundraising efforts, including grant writing and budget management for housing programs.
· Support training initiatives for advocates within the organization.
· Evaluate team progress in alignment with organizational goals.
· Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

· Juris Doctor degree with at least 7 years of legal practice.
· Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role, including hiring and performance management.
· Strong background in public housing, fair housing laws, and tenant rights advocacy.
· Proven track record in leading advocacy campaigns addressing the needs of low-income and minority communities.
· Experience in managing diverse teams and fostering collaboration.
· Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
· Willingness to travel as necessary (approximately 20%).
· Experience in complex litigation is highly desirable.
· Multilingual abilities are a plus.

Salary/Benefits: This full-time position offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and retirement plans.

We value diversity and encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply.
