Position Overview

This role is part of a continuous recruitment process and may close at any time without prior notice.

Assessment Process:
Evaluation (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest, and personal suitability for the role based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral assessment, and application review.

Should an oral assessment be required, it will carry a weight of 100%.

Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70% in each segment of the evaluation process.

Essential Qualifications:
The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time, compensated investigative experience that imparts knowledge of investigative methodologies and techniques.

Successful completion of Penal Code Section 832 course is required prior to employment; or, successful completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as an Assistant Medical Examiner. Continued employment beyond the one-year probationary period is contingent upon completion of the Penal Code Section 832 course and satisfactory job performance.

Candidates must successfully complete a firearms training course as mandated by the Sheriff-Coroner within the one-year probationary period. Carrying a firearm is a requirement.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is necessary.

Physical Demands:

Medical Evaluation: A thorough medical examination by the County Physician is mandatory.

Minimum Age Requirement: Candidates must be at least 21 years of age by the final application date.

Character Standards: Candidates must possess a reputation for integrity and reliability. Felony CONVICTIONS will disqualify applicants. Misdemeanor CONVICTIONS may also be disqualifying. A comprehensive background check will be conducted prior to appointment.

Work Environment: Candidates must be prepared to handle situations involving death, deceased individuals, and at times, decomposed remains; manage the emotional trauma associated with notifying next of kin; navigate challenging terrains to reach death scenes; endure adverse weather conditions; and accept on-call and standby assignments, as well as work shifts on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week as required.

Additional Information

All Kern County employees are designated as "Disaster Service Workers" in accordance with state and local laws. As Disaster Workers, all County employees are expected to remain at work or report for duty as soon as feasible following a significant emergency or disaster.

Entry to the examination will necessitate a valid government-issued photo identification.

Candidates unable to present proper identification must coordinate with the Human Resources Division prior to the examination date.

A background investigation may be conducted for this classification.

Upon receiving a job offer, candidates may be required to undergo post-offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish an eligibility list from which immediate appointments will be made. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be filled as necessary. Successful candidates will remain on the eligibility list for a period of twelve months, unless otherwise specified by the Civil Service Commission.
