Position Overview

Under general oversight, the role involves delivering patient care as assigned within a healthcare facility.

Compensation Details

The anticipated salary for this role ranges from $ to $. The indicated rates include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This represents only a fraction of the overall compensation package for this position. Additional earnings may be available through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. Furthermore, this role may qualify for participation and contributions to the Kern County Employees' Retirement Plan.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

The Vocational Nurse I is differentiated from the Vocational Nurse II by the latter's completion of a nursing board-approved course allowing the initiation of peripheral intravenous infusions. Vocational Nurse II's assigned to Psychiatric or Correctional Nursing must possess one (1) year of relevant experience in a specific specialty such as inpatient acute psychiatry or correctional medicine in lieu of the intravenous infusion certification.

Advancements within the series are evaluated on a merit basis, contingent upon recommendations from the Department Head and approval from the Vice President of Human Resources.

Core Responsibilities:

General Nursing Duties:
  • Executes advanced patient care functions utilizing extensive knowledge in techniques, methods, procedures, and equipment to support the registered nurse and medical team in patient treatment;
  • Exhibits understanding and application of the nursing process;
  • Delivers general nursing care across various departments;
  • Employs mechanical lifts for patient mobility;
  • Conducts minor dressing changes, cauterizations, deep tracheal suction, tracheotomy care, bathing, colostomy care, and traction care;
  • Records vital signs including temperature, pulse, and respiration;
  • Observes and documents unusual conditions or behaviors;
  • Contributes to the development of nursing care plans;
  • Maintains accurate records of patient conditions, medications, and treatments;
  • Prepares patients for examinations and treatments;
  • Administers prescribed special diets and treatments; provides medications if certified;
  • Assists staff with dressing changes;
  • Depending on the area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in caring for patients across all age groups, from newborns to geriatrics.
Correctional Nursing Duties:
  • Performs advanced patient care functions utilizing extensive knowledge in techniques, methods, procedures, and equipment to support the registered nurse and medical team in patient treatment;
  • Provides general nursing care in a correctional environment; records vital signs including temperature, pulse, and respiration;
  • Observes and documents unusual conditions or behaviors;

  • Maintains accurate records of patient conditions, medications, and treatments;
  • Prepares patients for examinations and treatments;
  • Administers prescribed special diets and treatments;
  • Provides medications if certified; assists staff with dressing changes;
  • Depending on the area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in caring for patients across all age groups, from newborns to geriatrics.
Employment Requirements:

General Nursing: Education:

Completion of a foundational Vocational Nurse curriculum accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician examiners.OR completion of an educational program leading to an Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.License: Possession of a current valid license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of CaliforniaOR possession of a temporary license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of CaliforniaOR possession of an interim permit to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California. Vocational Nurse II is required to be State certified to initiate intravenous infusions. Probationary employees with a temporary licenseOR an interim permit must obtain their California Vocational Nurse license during their 6-month probationary period or risk failing probation.

Correctional Nursing: Education:

Completion of a foundational Vocational Nurse curriculum accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician examiners.OR completion of an educational program leading to an Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.License: Possession of a current valid license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of CaliforniaOR possession of a temporary license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of CaliforniaOR possession of an interim permit to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California. Vocational Nurse II is required to be certified by Kern Medical Center to administer medications. One (1) year of experience in a correctional health care specialty may substitute for intravenous infusion certification at the Vocational Nurse II level. Probationary employees with a temporary licenseOR an interim permit must obtain their California Vocational Nurse license during their 6-month probationary period or risk failing probation.

Physical Demands: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; ability to sit, bend, squat, kneel, and/or twist; ability to push and pull heavy and bulky objects; ability to perform tasks requiring simple grasping and fine finger manipulation; ability to reach and manipulate objects above shoulder height; ability to lift and carry unassisted objects weighing up to 70 lbs. (objects are generally carried distances up to 100 feet); ability to assist with lifting and carrying objects weighing in excess of 100 lbs.; good visual and auditory acuity; ability to work in environments with prolonged exposure to noise, injury, disease, and death.

Depending on assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background check and be fingerprinted. Felony convictions will be disqualifying, and misdemeanors and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Employees must adhere to all health requirements set by Kern Medical;
  • Depending on assignment, incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency as a condition of employment;
  • A background check may be necessary for this classification.
