Position Overview

The Director of Research Finance & Operations plays a pivotal role in overseeing the financial management of grants within the Research Administration sector, ensuring adherence to federal and state regulations.

This position is responsible for maintaining the financial and information systems that underpin the research activities of the Center, providing essential financial analysis and support for the Research Division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze, monitor, and evaluate the Center's post-award sponsored research activities, including federal and non-federal projects and contracts.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the Center's financial systems, including general ledger and fixed assets, to support the Research Division's accounting needs.
  • Create and modify research projects in the financial systems, ensuring accurate tracking of all updates to sponsored funding.
  • Provide comprehensive financial analysis and monthly reporting for the Research Division, presenting findings and recommendations to management.
  • Supervise a team of Research Finance Analysts, serving as a resource for other Fiscal Services staff.
  • Review and authorize all non-personnel cost transfers, ensuring efficient and compliant administration of grants and contracts.
  • Develop tracking tools to manage financial operations and prevent overspending on awards.
  • Conduct monthly meetings with Research Administrators to review the research portfolio and address any financial discrepancies.
  • Facilitate the resolution of grant account discrepancies and ensure timely closure of accounts for completed projects.
  • Prepare and reconcile draws on the Center's letters of credit through the payment management system.
  • Manage the monthly close of the Center's general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of journal entries.
  • Prepare and certify reports for external entities, including federal and non-federal financial reports.
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations and grant stipulations, including monitoring sub-recipients of federal awards.
  • Act as the primary contact for auditors during the annual audit, preparing necessary documentation and schedules.
  • Prepare budget templates and monitor the budget preparation process for the Research Division.
  • Ensure expenditures are allowable and properly allocated, providing guidance to OSR Administrators on Research Finance issues.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Research to create an efficient sponsored accounting operation.
  • Engage in special projects as directed by the Controller.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • 5-7 years of significant experience in a financial office.
  • Accounting experience in a research or academic setting.
  • Familiarity with sponsored programs administration and knowledge of higher education research administration is highly desirable.
  • Experience in managing personnel is preferred.
  • Strong accounting skills and a comprehensive understanding of financial principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory environment for sponsored programs and federal funding agency policies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, and Access; strong computer skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Advanced mathematical and analytical skills.
