Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY

The Chief Marketing & Communications Officer is tasked with the strategic planning, development, and execution of all marketing initiatives, internal and external communications, and public relations efforts for the Los Angeles Education Partnership (LAEP). As a vital member of the executive team, this leader will work collaboratively with various departments to create and implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing visibility and brand recognition while supporting the mission of the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations

  • Formulate and execute a long-term vision for marketing and communications across the organization.
  • Identify key audiences, craft essential messages, and disseminate content through appropriate channels.
  • Maintain consistent branding and ensure alignment with the organization’s mission across all communication platforms.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to synchronize communication strategies with organizational objectives.
  • Articulate LAEP's desired image and ensure consistent messaging throughout the organization.
  • Oversee the editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all organizational publications and communications.
  • Manage media relations and ensure proactive engagement with targeted media outlets.
  • Coordinate the branding of all organizational materials, including print and digital assets.
  • Develop and oversee programs and resources to assist local chapters in their marketing and communication efforts.
  • Provide guidance to program and operations teams on marketing and public relations strategies.
  • Conduct regular market research to inform strategic decisions.
  • Monitor trends in education, equity, and wellness to support the implementation of LAEP's strategic initiatives.
  • Lead special projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Manage consultants and contracts as necessary for specific projects.

Strategic Planning and Budgeting

  • Develop and oversee the annual marketing and communications budget in collaboration with finance and program leaders.
  • Ensure the achievement of marketing and communications goals and financial targets.
  • Establish evaluation systems to track progress and report to the executive leadership.
  • Create both short- and long-term plans and budgets for marketing initiatives, ensuring adherence and evaluating performance.
  • Recommend organizational goals and objectives to the executive leadership.
  • Implement systems and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of the marketing and communications function.
  • Stay informed on trends in marketing, communications, and nonprofit management to drive innovation.

Organizational Strategy

  • Collaborate with leadership and staff to maintain a strategic focus on marketplace needs and organizational health.
  • Ensure that LAEP's philosophy, mission, and vision are clearly represented in all organizational materials.
  • Facilitate regular feedback from key stakeholders regarding program quality and organizational relevance.
  • Assist in formulating policies to uphold the integrity of the LAEP brand.
  • Act as an internal consultant to address institutional priorities.
  • Pursue partnership opportunities to enhance LAEP's network and brand visibility.

Organizational Excellence

  • Ensure effective management within the marketing and communications function, including succession planning.
  • Design and support cross-functional teams throughout the organization.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven expertise in designing and executing marketing and public relations strategies.
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in budget development and management.
  • Proficient in hiring, training, and supervising personnel or consultants.
  • Demonstrated success in media relations and public speaking.
  • Experience in overseeing the production of print and digital materials.
  • Proficient in relevant software applications.
  • Commitment to collaborative leadership and teamwork.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations is preferred.
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to the mission of LAEP.
  • Cultural competence to work effectively in diverse environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Integrity and a strong commitment to the organization's mission.
  • Experience working with volunteers is a plus.
  • A degree in journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • 7-10 years in a senior management role within a medium to large nonprofit organization is strongly preferred.
