Position Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Marketing & Communications Officer plays a pivotal role in the strategic planning, development, and execution of all marketing initiatives, internal and external communications, and public relations efforts for the Los Angeles Education Partnership (LAEP). As a key member of the executive team, this individual will work collaboratively with various departments to create and implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing visibility and brand recognition while supporting the initiatives of program teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations

  • Formulate and execute a long-term vision for marketing and communications within the organization.
  • Identify key audiences, craft essential messages, and disseminate content through appropriate channels.
  • Maintain consistent branding and ensure alignment with the organization's mission across all communication platforms.
  • Engage with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders to synchronize communication strategies with organizational objectives.
  • Articulate LAEP's desired image and ensure consistent representation throughout the organization.
  • Oversee the editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all organizational publications and communications.
  • Manage media relations and ensure proactive engagement with targeted media outlets.
  • Coordinate the design and presentation of all organizational materials, including branding elements.
  • Develop and oversee programs and resources to assist chapters in their marketing and communication efforts.
  • Provide strategic counsel to program and operations staff regarding marketing and public relations.
  • Conduct relevant market research to inform strategies and initiatives.
  • Monitor trends in education, equity, and wellness to support the implementation of LAEP's strategic plan.
  • Lead special projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Manage consultants and contracts for specific projects as needed.

Strategic Planning and Budgeting

  • Develop and oversee the annual marketing and communications budget in collaboration with finance and program directors.
  • Ensure the achievement of marketing and public relations goals and financial targets.
  • Establish evaluation systems to track progress towards these goals and report findings to the executive leadership.
  • Create both short- and long-term plans and budgets for marketing initiatives, ensuring adherence and evaluating outcomes.
  • Recommend organizational goals and objectives to the executive leadership based on strategic insights.
  • Implement systems and procedures to facilitate the smooth operation of marketing and communications functions.
  • Stay informed on trends in marketing, communications, and nonprofit management to drive innovation within LAEP.

Organizational Strategy

  • Collaborate with leadership and staff to maintain a strategic perspective focused on market needs and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Ensure that LAEP's mission and vision are clearly represented in all organizational materials.
  • Establish mechanisms for regular feedback from key constituencies regarding program quality and organizational relevance.
  • Assist in formulating policies that uphold the integrity of the LAEP brand.
  • Act as an internal consultant to address institutional priorities and enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Pursue partnership opportunities to strengthen LAEP's network and elevate brand awareness.

Organizational Excellence

  • Ensure effective management within the marketing and communications function, fostering a culture of leadership development.
  • Design and support cross-functional teams throughout the organization.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, with a proven track record of success, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and executing marketing and public relations strategies.
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in budget development and management.
  • Proven ability to lead, train, and evaluate personnel and consultants.
  • Successful experience in media relations, including writing press releases and delivering presentations.
  • Proficiency in overseeing the design and production of marketing materials.
  • Computer literacy in relevant software applications.
  • Commitment to collaborative leadership and teamwork.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizational structures and operations.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Commitment to educational equity and the mission of LAEP.
  • Cultural competence to work effectively in diverse environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to the organization's mission.
  • Experience working with volunteers is a plus.
  • A degree in journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • 7-10 years in a senior management role within a medium to large nonprofit organization is strongly preferred.
