Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range for this position reflects a nationwide market range and encompasses a variety of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary will be influenced by several factors, including the role's scope, complexity, and location, as well as the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials, and experience. Additionally, employees are eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program.

Position Summary
The Catastrophe Risk Management Group at Travelers is looking for a Senior Associate Data Scientist to join our PERILS team. This team is comprised of committed professionals focused on preparing Travelers to withstand catastrophic losses from both natural and human-made disasters.

The PERILS team engages in multi-disciplinary research, analytics development, and event response initiatives. As a member of this team, you will actively contribute to the creation and execution of peril research and strategies, participating in complex enterprise-wide CAT research projects with varying focuses. This role demands an individual who thrives in an analytical, innovation-driven setting, aligned with business needs.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Associate Data Scientist, you will elevate the organization’s analytical capabilities by employing advanced statistical methods and machine learning techniques. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting independent tasks to support the development of analytical solutions, engaging stakeholders, and providing informed recommendations.
  • Evaluating catastrophe models, performing sensitivity testing, calibration, and validation, particularly focusing on wildfire and cyber risks.
  • Creating tools and features to implement the latest peril research/models into operational use.
  • Acquiring domain and business knowledge to construct statistical models.
  • Effectively communicating analyses, insights, and results to management, peers, and team members.
  • Staying updated on scientific research and synthesizing academic literature.
  • Mentoring less experienced analytic professionals.
  • Completing additional duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a STEM-related field or equivalent.
  • At least one year of relevant experience.
  • Moderate proficiency in modeling, research, analytics, or actuarial practices.
  • Understanding of the primary P&C insurance market, basic CAT modeling concepts, and familiarity with one or more vendor CAT models is preferred. CAT model certification is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and research capabilities, particularly with undefined issues.
  • Experience in statistical analysis is required.
  • Proficiency in statistical techniques and the ability to read and modify statistical software programs (e.g., R/Matlab/SAS).
  • Ability to develop basic models and interpret results.
  • Basic understanding of advanced statistics relevant to data models.
  • Capability to apply emerging statistical methods to work.
  • Familiarity with regression, classification, and statistical modeling.
  • Moderate knowledge of a programming language (e.g., Python) is strongly preferred.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to organize and drive analyses independently.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts across various professional disciplines.
  • Experience with geospatial analysis is a plus.
Essential Requirements
  • Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Sciences, Actuarial Science, or a related analytical STEM field, along with one year of experience, or any suitable combination of education and work experience.
  • Significant focus on mathematics, including statistics and programming, business intelligence/analytics, and data science tools with large datasets. Verification of specific coursework may be required.
