Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range for this role is reflective of the national market and encompasses a wide spectrum of salaries across the country. The actual salary will be influenced by various factors, including the role's scope, complexity, location, and the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials, and experience. Additionally, employees may qualify for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program.

Position Summary

The Catastrophe Risk Management Group at Travelers is in search of a Senior Associate Data Scientist to join our PERILS team. This group of committed professionals is responsible for ensuring that Travelers is well-prepared to withstand catastrophic losses from both natural and human-made events.

The PERILS team is a diverse group focusing on peril research, developing cutting-edge analytics, and managing event responses. As a member of this team, you will actively contribute to the creation and execution of peril research and strategies. The role involves engaging in complex, enterprise-wide CAT research projects with varying levels of focus. We seek an individual who thrives in an analytical, innovation-oriented environment and aligns with business needs.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Associate Data Scientist, you will elevate the organization’s intelligence by employing advanced statistical methods and machine learning techniques. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Independently executing tasks to develop analytical solutions, engaging stakeholders, and providing recommendations.
  • Evaluating catastrophe models, conducting sensitivity analyses, calibration, and validation, particularly concerning wildfire and cyber threats.
  • Creating tools and features to implement the latest peril research/models into operational use.
  • Acquiring domain and business knowledge to construct statistical models.
  • Effectively communicating analyses, insights, and results to management, peers, and team members.
  • Staying updated on scientific research and synthesizing academic literature.
  • Assisting or mentoring less experienced analytical professionals.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will possess:
  • A Master’s degree in a STEM-related field or equivalent.
  • At least one year of relevant experience.
  • A moderate understanding of modeling, research, analytics, or actuarial science.
  • Domain knowledge of the primary P&C insurance market, a foundational grasp of CAT modeling concepts, and familiarity with one or more vendor CAT models is preferred. Certification in CAT modeling is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and research capabilities, particularly with undefined issues.
  • Experience in statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency in statistical techniques and the ability to read and modify statistical software programs (e.g., R/Matlab/SAS).
  • Capability to develop basic models and interpret their results.
  • A foundational understanding of advanced statistics related to data models.
  • Ability to apply emerging statistical methodologies to tasks.
  • Working knowledge of regression, classification, and statistical modeling.
  • Moderate proficiency in a programming language (e.g., Python) is strongly preferred.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to organize and drive analyses independently.
  • Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts across various professional disciplines.
  • Experience with geospatial analysis is a plus.

Essential Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Sciences, Actuarial Science, or a related analytical STEM field, along with one year of experience, or any suitable combination of education and work experience.
  • A strong emphasis on mathematics, including statistics and programming, business intelligence/analytics, and data science tools, particularly with large datasets.
