We are in search of a risk management expert who is technically skilled, self-driven, and results-oriented to join our Northeast Shared Services division. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing thorough safety and risk evaluations, providing our Underwriting teams with insightful analytical assessments of risk to support our aim for profitable growth across various sectors, including Dealerships, Construction, Manufacturing, Wholesale Trade, Retail, Commercial Real Estate, and Service industries. Additionally, the chosen individual will foster strong relationships with our agents and policyholders, leading selected safety workshops and training sessions to enhance the value-added services that Sentry is recognized for.

The preferred location for this role is in or near the Hartford, CT area, although exceptional candidates from surrounding regions will be considered. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about advising on safety and risk management strategies, capable of working remotely, and possesses excellent organizational skills to effectively manage their assigned territory.

This position may be filled at the level of Safety and Risk Management Consultant I, II, or Senior Consultant, depending on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities

The following outlines the primary responsibilities associated with the Safety and Risk Management Consultant role:

  • Conduct on-site evaluations of facilities to assess whether operational risks are being effectively managed to prevent losses. Establish the scope and schedule for preventative maintenance programs on critical mechanical systems within the facility (including electrical systems, HVAC, machinery, and roof conditions).
  • Evaluate whether facility protection measures (such as fire suppression and alarm systems) are suitable for the building's occupancy, risks, and unique hazards.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for each line of business – including Property, General Liability, Auto, and Workers Compensation – to assist our underwriting teams with account acceptability and insurability.
  • Support clients in the development and implementation of safety policies, programs, and procedures tailored to each account and its associated risks.
  • Deliver advanced risk management and consulting services to assigned clients.
  • Perform job-site safety inspections and conduct OSHA 10-hour training sessions for our Regional construction sector.
  • Maintain and demonstrate expertise in safety management across various domains, including commercial property protection, general liability, product liability, fleet safety, and employee safety.
  • Design, coordinate, and facilitate safety and risk management seminars and training programs for clients to enhance awareness and reduce the frequency and severity of claims.
  • Develop and implement service proposals and plans for qualified accounts.

Qualifications

  • A four-year degree in Safety or a related field is preferred.
  • Specialization in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering, or Physical Sciences is advantageous.
  • 1-5 years of experience in insurance safety consulting or safety roles within private industry (particularly in construction and manufacturing).
  • Demonstrated independence, organizational skills, and self-motivation to work remotely.
  • Experience in managing and servicing large or multi-location accounts is preferred.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, ANSI, NFPA Standards, and DOT regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and utilize specialized building valuation systems, diagramming, and reporting software.
  • Acceptable driving record for travel (approximately 50%), including potential overnight travel.
  • A desire to pursue professional safety designations, including CSP and other relevant certifications.
