GENERAL OVERVIEW

This role is situated within a premier park renowned for its rich archaeology, history, diverse flora and fauna, and recreational opportunities. The individual will be responsible for the upkeep of facilities that cater to numerous visitors annually, while also educating them on the importance of preserving this unique environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the guidance of the Park Superintendent, this position entails performing advanced supervisory maintenance and construction tasks. The incumbent will take on Lead Maintenance responsibilities at the designated state park, acting as the primary coordinator for maintenance personnel and park volunteers. This includes:

  • Providing direction and support to maintenance staff.
  • Scheduling and overseeing daily maintenance and repair activities for facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Serving as the Utility Plant Operator (UPO), ensuring the effective management, routine upkeep, and regulatory compliance of the park's water systems and other utilities.
  • Preparing reports, training staff, and handling various administrative tasks such as purchasing and revenue collection.
  • Facilitating visitor orientation and delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Enforcing park regulations through cooperative compliance and educating visitors about the park's natural and cultural resources.

This position operates with limited supervision, allowing for significant initiative and independent decision-making. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary, and adherence to all relevant agency regulations is expected.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience: A minimum of four years in facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance, with at least two years in a supervisory or leadership role, which may include managing paid staff, volunteers, or alternative workforces.
  • Licensure: A valid State driver's license is required. The candidate must also obtain a class 'D' Water and/or Wastewater license from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in public engagement.
  • Familiarity with water and/or wastewater systems.
  • Background in public parks, historic sites, or conservation areas.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Expertise in advanced construction, repair, and maintenance methods, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, utility management, masonry, and mechanical repairs.
  • Understanding of natural and cultural resource conservation principles.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service in a professional manner.
  • Capability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Skills in information dissemination, fee collection, and permit issuance.
  • Experience in training and leading teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Competence in making sound, independent decisions.
  • Proficiency in using various tools and equipment, including tractors and power tools.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting materials up to 50 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires working in a public park setting, with a commitment to a 40-hour work week that may include varied schedules outside of standard hours. Responsibilities may involve responding to emergencies and working outdoors in diverse weather conditions. A non-smoking environment is maintained in all state facilities.
