Overview

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel.

The DoD SkillBridge Internships are designed to assist transitioning active-duty military personnel in acquiring practical experience in the workforce during their final days of active-duty service.

The intern will engage in significant projects and collaborate closely with a mentor and senior leadership within the organization.

HII Mission Technologies Internship programs aim to integrate transitioning military personnel into roles that align with their skills, education, and military training, facilitating a smooth transition to full-time employment with HII.

In this internship, the SkillBridge intern will focus on Materials Engineering within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated supervisor, with the objective of mastering the fundamentals and principles of Materials Engineering.

The intern will be tasked with special projects as required.

Desired Outcomes (3-4 month target)

  • By the conclusion of four months, the intern will possess the skills necessary to characterize products, utilize various analytical instruments, interpret collected data, and collaborate with the Geometry and Material Properties team.
  • The intern will gain a comprehensive understanding of characterization equipment, including its configurations, operations, and troubleshooting procedures.

This encompasses:
o Operation, configuration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
o Fabrication, preparation, and analysis of test specimens.
o Identification of required testing procedures based on specifications and material applications.
o Creation, review, and editing of technical analysis reports.

  • HII Mission Technologies will benefit from the military experience of the SkillBridge intern, viewing the internship as a mutually beneficial opportunity.

Training Plan

Phase 1 - Fundamentals

Week 1:
Orientation, introductions, and office familiarization.

Week 2:

Introduction to the Geometry and Material Properties (GMP) team, their operations, and specific safety protocols.


Week 3:
Introduction to resource databases and processes.

Week 4:
Introduction to general instrumentation.

Phase 2 – Instrumentation Familiarization

Week 5:
Familiarization with SEM-EDS, XRF, OES.

Week 6:
Familiarization with FT-IR Spectrometer.

Week 7:
Familiarization with Raman Spectrometer.

Week 8:
Familiarization with Hardness Tester and Pycnometer.

Week 9:
Familiarization with Tensile/Compression Tester.

Phase 3 – Data Collection, Processing, and Reporting

Week 10:
Identification of necessary testing procedures based on material applications.

Week 11:
Execution of fabrication and preparation of sample analysis per instrument.

Week 12:
Proper interpretation and processing of collected data.

Week 13:
Creation, review, and editing of analysis reports derived from collected data.

Additional Goals

  • Participate in group collaboration discussions.
  • Engage in GMP bi-weekly updates and tool development discussions.
  • Gain familiarity with equipment maintenance and database management.

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within the final 180 days of active-duty service.

Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering required.

Physical requirements will vary based on the Program of Instruction.
