Job Overview
The Air Force STEM organization is seeking a dedicated and skilled mid-level scientist/engineer to join a vibrant and interdisciplinary team within the Polymer Matrix Composites Branch. This role is integral to advancing research in the field of composite materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the experimental characterization and modeling efforts of fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) as part of the Composites Performance Research Team.
  • Assess the performance of innovative composite variants, including those that are additively manufactured and multifunctional.
  • Enhance the fundamental understanding of composite materials' responses in application-relevant environments, focusing on critical damage mechanisms.
  • Formulate a strategic portfolio, identifying opportunities for cross-team and interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Oversee extramural programs aimed at advancing polymer and FRC technologies.
  • Establish and nurture partnerships with government, industry, and academic entities, while exploring international collaboration possibilities.
  • Effectively communicate research findings to the technical community and facilitate the transition of technology to industry and defense users.

Position Details:
This position is available at the DR-2 (GS-11-12 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level. The role may be offered as a Flexible Length Term appointment, with potential for extension or conversion to a permanent position.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and possess a professional science or engineering degree in a relevant technical field from an accredited institution. If the highest degree is a Bachelor's, one year of experience at the DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) level is required for DR-02 consideration, and one year of specialized experience at the DR-02 (GS-13) level is necessary for DR-03 consideration. Candidates must also be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Additional Requirements:
This position is part of the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) and requires Level II certification in the Science and Technology Manager (N) functional area. Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on their resume and will have 24 months to meet the certification requirements.

Desired Qualifications:
An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant technical field such as materials science engineering, polymer science/engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or physics is preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a solid background in materials research, experimental characterization, and FRC modeling are essential. Experience in program management, including project requirement setting and execution of technical, cost, and schedule objectives, is also desired.
