Position Summary

We are in search of a skilled and forward-thinking Senior Material Research Scientist to become a vital member of our research and development division. The ideal candidate will concentrate on the design, development, and analysis of cutting-edge multifunctional composite materials that amalgamate various functionalities, including structural integrity, electrical properties, thermal management, and sensing capabilities. This position necessitates close collaboration with a diverse team of engineers, material scientists, data analysts, and AI/ML researchers to propel the next wave of innovations in composite materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Steer the technical direction in collaboration with government entities and mentor junior and mid-level personnel.
  • Design and fabricate advanced multifunctional composite materials with integrated characteristics such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal management, and sensing abilities.
  • Conduct experimental investigations to synthesize and evaluate multifunctional composites.
  • Develop and refine fabrication methodologies for multifunctional composites, encompassing additive manufacturing, hybrid techniques, and innovative assembly processes.
  • Execute material characterization through techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.
  • Assess and characterize the behavior of multifunctional materials in application-relevant environments, including extreme conditions (temperature, chemical exposure, radiation, plasma, and hypersonic scenarios).
  • Analyze data to predict the impact of mechanical loads on functional performance.
  • Perform experimental evaluations to measure tension, compression, shear properties, and interlaminar tension/shear.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including materials scientists, RF engineers, and AI/ML specialists to integrate multifunctional composites into both new and existing components.
  • Interpret results and analyze data to inform material development and optimization.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, presentations, and publications to disseminate research findings.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline with a focus on multifunctional composites, along with 8 years of relevant experience; or 6 years with a Master's degree; or 3 years with a PhD.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Over 5 years of experience in the research and development of multifunctional composite materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical projects and teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of composite material properties, fabrication techniques, and their applications.
  • Expertise in materials characterization methods such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and AFM.
  • Familiarity with computational modeling and simulation tools for composite materials.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic characterization techniques using lasers, microwaves, and electrical probe methods.

Desired:

  • Experience in the aerospace, automotive, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Understanding of sustainable and eco-friendly composite materials.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing funding for research initiatives.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing and hybrid fabrication methodologies.

Compensation

The compensation range for this position is between $130,000 and $220,000, reflecting the typical salary based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
