Position Overview:

The Anesthesia Support Specialist operates under the supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider and plays a vital role in the anesthesia care team, assisting in clinical environments where anesthesia is administered.

Responsibilities include adhering to the practice standards established by the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).

Utilizes sterile techniques to prepare the anesthesia workstation, anesthesia machines, and necessary equipment, considering the type of anesthesia, patient demographics, and preferences of the anesthesia provider.

Provides assistance to the anesthesia provider during procedures as required. Aids in room turnover by removing and disposing of all anesthesia-related supplies and equipment properly. Prepares and manages all anesthesia-related items that need cleaning, disinfection, and decontamination. Conducts inspections of instruments and equipment for any damage and initiates the appropriate repair and replacement processes. Adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure safety and prevent contamination.

Performs routine maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks on anesthesia machines and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and institutional policies.

Maintains inventory of supplies and ensures that operating rooms, procedure areas, and anesthesia carts are adequately stocked, with backup carts and machines prepared for use.

Collaborates closely with anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, operating room personnel, and management. May be required to participate in an on-call schedule based on operational needs. Performs additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required.

Preferred qualifications include two years of experience as an anesthesia technician, or relevant experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician.


Skills and Knowledge:
Familiarity with practice standards as per the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). Knowledgeable in infection control, OSHA regulations, Universal Precautions, Waste Management, AORN, and AAMI standards. Demonstrates professional conduct consistently. Possesses strong time management skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often stressful environment. Continually seeks to enhance knowledge regarding anesthesia equipment and supplies.

Capable of reading, writing clearly, and communicating in English (Spanish preferred) with a professional demeanor; proficient in using necessary computer and software applications; able to troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment.

Exhibits effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing; able to assertively enforce policies; remains calm and courteous under pressure; capable of leading, supervising, teaching, and collaborating; open to direction.

Must be able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and via telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal oversight; perform basic mathematical functions; manage multiple tasks efficiently; work well under pressure; solve problems; organize and prioritize workload; recall information accurately; and maintain attention to detail.

Must be able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear adequately for general conversation; identify and differentiate various sounds in the workplace; see well enough to read computer screens, medical records, and necessary documentation; and discern temperature variations through touch.


Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required. Certification from the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians is preferred.
