Position Overview:

The Anesthesia Support Specialist operates under the supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider and plays a vital role within the anesthesia care team, aiding the provider in environments where anesthesia is administered.

This role involves executing responsibilities in accordance with the practice standards established by the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).

Utilizes sterile techniques to prepare the anesthesia workstation, anesthesia apparatus, and related equipment, considering the specific type of anesthesia to be delivered, the patient's age and size, and the preferences of the anesthesia provider.

Provides assistance to the anesthesia provider during procedures as required. Aids in the turnover of operating rooms, disposing of all anesthesia materials and equipment properly. Prepares and processes all anesthesia-related items that necessitate cleaning, disinfection, and decontamination. Evaluates instruments and equipment for any damage and initiates necessary repair and replacement actions. Adheres to established policies, procedures, and guidelines to safeguard oneself and others from contamination.

Conducts daily maintenance, calibration, and quality control assessments on anesthesia machines and equipment in line with manufacturer guidelines and hospital protocols.

Maintains inventory of supplies and ensures that operating rooms, procedure areas, and anesthesia carts are adequately stocked, with backup carts and machines ready for immediate use.

Collaborates closely with anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, operating room personnel, and management. May be required to participate in an on-call rotation based on operational needs. Performs additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is mandatory.

Preferred qualifications include two years of experience as an anesthesia technician, or experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician.


Skills and Knowledge:
Familiarity with practice standards as outlined by the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). Knowledgeable in infection control, OSHA regulations, Universal Precautions, Waste Management, AORN, and AAMI standards. Demonstrates professional conduct consistently. Possesses effective time management skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, frequently changing, and high-pressure environment. Continuously seeks to enhance knowledge regarding anesthesia equipment and supplies.

Capable of reading, writing clearly, and communicating in English (Spanish is a plus) with a professional demeanor; proficient in using necessary computer software and troubleshooting patient care equipment.

Able to interact and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; assertive and consistent in adhering to and enforcing policies; remains calm and courteous under pressure; capable of leading, supervising, teaching, and collaborating; open to direction.

Proficient in communicating effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; possesses critical thinking skills; able to work independently with minimal supervision; performs basic mathematical functions; manages multiple tasks efficiently; works well under pressure; adept at problem-solving; organizes and prioritizes workload; recalls information accurately; and pays close attention to detail.

Able to distinguish colors and odors as necessary for patient care; hears sufficiently for general conversation in person and over the phone; identifies and differentiates various sounds related to the workplace/patient care; sees adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary for the role; and senses temperature variations through touch.


Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required. Certification from the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians is preferred.
