Position Overview

Role Summary:
The Anesthesia Support Specialist operates under the supervision of licensed anesthesia professionals and plays a vital role within the anesthesia care team. This position involves assisting the anesthesia provider in various clinical environments where anesthesia is administered. Responsibilities include adhering to the practice standards established by the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). Employing sterile techniques, the specialist prepares the anesthesia workstation, ensuring all equipment and supplies are ready based on the type of anesthesia, patient demographics, and provider preferences.

During procedures, the specialist supports the anesthesia provider as required, assists with the turnover of operating rooms, and ensures the proper disposal of all anesthesia-related materials. Responsibilities also include cleaning, disinfecting, and decontaminating anesthesia equipment and supplies. The specialist is tasked with inspecting instruments for damage and initiating repairs or replacements as necessary. Adherence to policies and procedures is essential to maintain safety and prevent contamination.

Daily maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks on anesthesia machines and equipment are performed according to manufacturer guidelines and institutional policies. The specialist is responsible for inventory management, ensuring that operating rooms and anesthesia carts are adequately stocked and prepared for use. Collaboration with anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, operating room personnel, and leadership is crucial. Participation in an on-call schedule may be required based on operational needs. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience:
A High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required. Preferred qualifications include two years of experience as an anesthesia technician, as well as experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician.

Skills and Knowledge:
Familiarity with practice standards as outlined by the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) is essential. Knowledge of infection control protocols, OSHA regulations, Universal Precautions, Waste Management, AORN, and AAMI standards is expected. The candidate should demonstrate professional behavior consistently, possess strong time management skills, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Continuous learning about anesthesia equipment and supplies is encouraged.

Abilities:

Capable of reading and writing legibly; proficient in spoken English (Spanish preferred) with a professional demeanor; adept at using necessary computer software; skilled in troubleshooting and calibrating patient care equipment.

Able to communicate positively and effectively with colleagues; assertive in policy enforcement; maintain composure under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate effectively; and accept guidance.

Proficient in English communication in person, in writing, and over the phone; critical thinking skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic mathematical functions; manage multiple tasks efficiently; and maintain attention to detail.

Able to distinguish colors and smells essential for patient care; possess adequate hearing for general conversation; identify various sounds related to the workplace; and have sufficient vision to read documents and screens necessary for the role.


Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required. Certification from the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians is preferred.
