SUMMARY

Function: Utilizes technical knowledge, leadership abilities, analytical skills, and business acumen to oversee the comprehensive operations of the Lozano laboratory.

Scope: Influences all facets of laboratory management, including the oversight of the animal colony and collaborative clinical efforts across the institution.

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's or PhD and exceptional technical and experimental capabilities.

KEY FUNCTIONS

The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the laboratory and conducting experiments as necessary to support the publication of research findings. Key responsibilities include:

· Overseeing the animal facility for the Lozano lab and maintaining a small group of mice for:

a) experimental purposes

b) assistance to lab colleagues as required

c) fulfilling requests for animals from other principal investigators (both within and outside the institution)

· Genotyping mice and utilizing them for experiments as needed.

· Initiating new experiments as projects develop and proactively suggesting experimental approaches. Required skills include:

a) Preparation of DNA, RNA, and proteins

b) Real-time PCR techniques

c) Western blot analysis

d) Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining

e) Cell culture, including the generation of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs)

· Managing Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and animal protocols. Preparing for semi-annual Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) inspections. Coordinating with Veterinary Medicine for animal import and export preparations.

· Familiarity with eGlobal Shipping. Preparing all shipping packages for laboratory use.

· Annotating and organizing biological samples in -80°C freezers and maintaining cell lines in liquid nitrogen storage.

· Placing orders for laboratory reagents, supplies, research animals, and mouse room cage cards.

· Overseeing inventory of supplies and equipment, tracking expenditures.

· Applying laboratory expertise to identify and resolve operational challenges within the research environment and collaborating with others to address issues.

· Assisting graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with their projects in the laboratory.

· Ensuring all laboratory equipment is maintained and functioning properly.

· Collaborating with the laboratory safety officer to ensure adherence to state, federal, and institutional regulations regarding the storage, use, and disposal of materials. Preparing for the annual Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) inspection.

· Performing other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree.

Preferred: Master's degree.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Seven years of experience in scientific, research, or clinical laboratory settings, including four years in a supervisory or managerial role. With a preferred degree, five years of required experience, including four years in a supervisory or managerial capacity. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Required: Must successfully complete a pre-employment skills assessment as mandated by Human Resources.
