SUMMARY


The primary purpose of the Supervisor, Laboratory & Research position is to provide oversight and technical management in the laboratory operations.

Plans and implements all activities within a research laboratory. Directs, plans, and participates in department research activities and projects.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Laboratory Operations and Supervision:
Works with faculty supervisors and Department Administrator to manage workflow. Supervises staffing for laboratory. Reviews and evaluates research activity of laboratory and research personnel with faculty supervisors.

Selects key classified personnel, assigns and reviews work of subordinates, determine specific goals or objectives to be obtained, evaluates resulting research data and revises techniques or research to obtain desired results.

Compiles, writes and submits project results to superiors. Presents findings of research project to faculty supervisors and prepares scientific documents for publication. Maintains the quality and timeliness of all research laboratory operations; oversees maintenance, rules and regulations, cleanliness, and safety. Coordinates workflow issues, administrative issues, and operations issues.

Identify and resolve overall research laboratory operational issues and interacts with all levels of internal and external sources to resolve problems.

Provide development opportunities and ongoing feedback to staff. Plans, organizes, coordinates and participates in scientific research projects. Plans training and research work activity for assigned laboratory and research personnel. Defines and develops reports according to laboratory needs.

Uses laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve laboratory operational issues and interacts with all levels of internal and external sources to resolve problems.

Ensures laboratory adherence to safety standards. Represents department or research committees as needed.

Laboratory Equipment:
Supervises the use of laboratory equipment and implements safety procedures. Designs, develops or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

Responsible for major and minor equipment, including routine maintenance, service contracts, and repairs; recommends replacement or purchase of new equipment; reviews and makes recommendations for purchasing based on anticipated work-load.

Works with departmental property officer to ensure correctness of inventory data base. Researches current techniques and arranges demonstrations on equipment. Plans and/or conducts in-service programs. Supervises the use of laboratory equipment and implements safety procedures. Manages laboratory's critical alarms through the Facilities Operations Notification System. Ensures that all employees in the laboratory are properly trained on new equipment. Provides all staff with information on available resources that benefit their positions.

Laboratory Compliance & Space:
Ensures appropriate lab compliance with MD Anderson and accrediting agency regulations. Oversight of laboratory compliance and regulatory fitness, including inspections and safety accreditation with internal and external entities. Supervise assigned staff and collaboratively work with all facility and laboratory representatives. Participate in emergency planning to ensure research is best served in the event of an emergency. Reviews current laboratory space.

Identifies laboratory needs and coordinates with supervisor, facilities, and research facilities to provide appropriate guidance in order to meet the needs of the laboratory, department and institution.

Participate and provide input regarding all facility meetings that may impact research operations.

REQUIREMENTS:

Required Education:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, one of the basic sciences or related field.

Preferred Education:
Master's Level Degree

Required Experience:
Ten years of experience in scientific or experimental research to include three years of lead or supervisory experience.

Preferred Experience:
With Master's degree, six years of experience is required to include three years of lead or supervisory experience. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

Onsite Presence:
Is Required.


Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience. Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
