GENERAL OVERVIEW

In this role, you will undertake advanced laboratory evidence technician responsibilities, which encompass the reception, storage, return, and/or disposal of crime-related evidence items in accordance with judicial directives and relevant legal requirements. You will be tasked with meticulously documenting all transactions related to evidence receipt, management, inventory, and destruction. Additionally, you will support laboratory staff in managing the inventory and disposition of evidence held within laboratory vaults. There may also be opportunities to assist in the procurement of supplies and chemicals, while maintaining accurate records of these orders. This position operates under limited supervision, allowing for considerable initiative and independent decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain cleanliness and organization within laboratory vaults, assisting laboratory personnel with the handling of evidence, including its receipt, storage, return, or destruction. Ensure accurate inventory management using laboratory computer systems.
  2. Potentially oversee the activities of other staff members.
  3. Consistently attend work and adhere to approved working hours in line with agency policies regarding attendance and leave.
  4. Carry out additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: A minimum of six (6) months of progressively responsible experience in a business or laboratory setting involving data recording, barcoding items, conducting inventories, weighing materials, and managing samples for analysis, or a similar duration of experience in a law enforcement context, particularly in evidence handling (receipt, destruction, inventory, etc.).

Substitution Note: Successful completion of at least fifteen (15) hours of college coursework in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science may be considered.

Licensure: A valid driver’s license from your state of residence is required.

Regulatory Knowledge: A working understanding of, or the capacity to quickly learn, relevant regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies, and procedures related to laboratory operations at both state and federal levels.

Interpersonal Skills: The ability to demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy while establishing and maintaining positive professional relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Organizational Skills: Must be organized, adaptable, and capable of effectively prioritizing tasks in a dynamic environment, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines without compromising accuracy or professionalism.

Communication Skills: Ability to create and deliver clear, concise, and professional presentations to diverse audiences.

Research Skills: Demonstrated ability to efficiently access and utilize relevant information, presenting research findings in a clear and concise manner.

Analytical Skills: Must possess the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and draw accurate conclusions to solve problems.

Technical Proficiency: Proficient in relevant software and systems, with the ability to learn new technologies. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is essential. Competence in typing and data entry is also required.

Confidentiality: Must handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly, adhering to applicable laws and policies regarding information access and dissemination.

Safety Compliance: Must consistently work in a safe manner, adhering to safety standards and best practices.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift weights up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Occasional driving may be required.
