Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Packaging Engineer to join our team at Butler Aerospace and Defense. As a key member of our Logistics and Sustainment Engineering Function, you will be responsible for coordinating program packaging and shipping needs, ensuring contractual packaging and DOT CFR 49 POP requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Program IPTs, Suppliers, and Shipping Department to coordinate program packaging and shipping needs.
  • Identify and develop system, subsystems, and component packaging and transportation requirements.
  • Develop special packaging instructions (SPI) as required.
  • Evaluate new packaging techniques to improve the shipping process.
  • Work with vendors, Integrated Product Teams, and customers to improve packaging designs.
  • Perform root cause analysis on damaged shipments.
  • Coordinate truck requests through the Shipping department for all sites.
  • Provide truck contact information to site personnel.
  • Ensure all necessary crates and/or packaging are provided for packaging hardware on site.
  • Track the condition of reusable shipping crates and initiate repair or replacement as needed.
  • Maintain a list of contacts for each site along with unique shipping requirements for each site.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of shipping practices and procedures and inspection requirements.
  • Ability to use the Company purchase request and other applicable computer systems.
  • Knowledge of appropriate handling and packaging procedures and Federal Department of Transportation regulations as they relate to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of MSDS in order to receive, inventory, and identify hazardous materials.
  • Ability to operate transportation carrier, computerized shipping meters, label makers, and shipment pricing devices.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to use strapping, cutting, and carton-making machines, and processing equipment such as spray guns and brushes, electric or motor-powered material moving carts, floor-controlled cranes and hoists, weighing and counting scales, power saws, hand tools, and portable drills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Packaging Engineering degree preferred.
  • Strong technical background.
  • Mechanical Computer Aided Drawing (MCAD) skills. CREO preferred.
  • PTC Pro/E skills.
  • Strong technical background.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build effective working relationships, and be able to work well in a team atmosphere.
  • Be flexible with an outstanding work ethic and possess the ability to respond quickly to internal and external customer requirements.
  • Candidate must be willing to work onsite, overtime, and int. travel as needed to support program requirements.
  • Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, technical writing experience, and an ability to perform oral presentations in front of large groups.
  • Hazardous Materials transportation and shipping regulation knowledge.
  • Familiar with Military specifications/standards.
  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) knowledge.
  • Familiarity and experience working with Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (Parts).
  • Familiarity and experience working with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Technical Instruction for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, or the International Maritime Organization's International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDGC) based on the modes of shipment.
  • Familiarity and experience working with commercial packaging in accordance with ASTM D 3951 that allows for storage in enclosed facilities for one (1) year without damage to the hardware.
  • Product Data Management software and workflow process familiarity.
