Job Overview

The ZACHARY SCOTT THEATER CENTER is a prominent non-profit organization dedicated to crafting immersive theatrical experiences that spark creativity, uplift spirits, and foster community engagement. The Senior Scenic Fabricator collaborates closely with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, and Scene Shop Supervisor to construct all set elements for ZACH Productions, ensuring the artistic vision of the Scenic Studios is maintained.

Key Responsibilities:

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Fabricate scenery and set components as directed by the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, and Scene Shop Supervisor.
  • Oversee project teams on specific assignments without direct oversight.
  • Install stage scenery, which includes both stationary and dynamic elements.
  • Implement complex rigging solutions under the guidance of the Technical Direction and Scenic Studios leadership.
  • Assist in the setup of stage automation systems.
  • Prepare the stage area, which may involve installing special railings, seating, and other production-specific tasks.
  • Participate in the dismantling of the set following the conclusion of performances.
  • Support other departments as time and production schedules permit.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the work area and collaborate with the scenic team to uphold shop organization.
  • Manage the upkeep and organization of stock scenery, scenery carts, road kits, and other scenic assets as directed by the Scenic Studios Supervisor.
  • Engage in all Daily Stand Ups and procedural meetings called by Shop Leadership.
  • Special Events: Provide general production assistance for all ZACH special events as directed by the Technical Director.
  • Rental Program: Address technical requirements for the facility rental program.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in Carpentry, Welding, or a combination of education and practical experience that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
Skills and Competencies:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Fundamental understanding of foam materials and their applications.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks to maximize both business and artistic outcomes.
  • Basic comprehension of geometric and mathematical principles.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of hand, power, and industrial tools.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE) and standard safety practices.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Willingness to operate forklifts following in-house certification.
  • Capability to lead and mentor others in complex tasks.
  • Willingness to drive panel vans and 24' box trucks.
  • Extensive knowledge of carpentry techniques and tools.
  • Broad understanding of metalworking tools and techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of rigging hardware and its applications.
  • Ability to interpret and execute construction drawings.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively and maintain a positive demeanor under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or maneuver up to 70 lbs. repeatedly, either independently or with assistance.
  • Comfortable working in non-climate-controlled environments.
  • Comfortable working at heights using ladders, mechanical lifts, or other elevated platforms.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces.
  • Must have reliable transportation and the flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • The noise level in this work environment is typically moderate but can be elevated.

Collaborates with: Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Scenic Shop Supervisor, Scenic Charge and Artisan, Props Manager, Props Artisan, Carpenters, and Overhire.
