Position Summary:
The Technical Director is responsible for ensuring the timely and budget-conscious delivery of scenic elements for various productions, including Main Stage, Family Series, Education, and special events. This role collaborates closely with the Stage Operations Supervisor and Assistant Technical Director to facilitate efficient and safe scenery transitions, leading the load-in and load-out processes for scenery, automation, and special effects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Scenic Studios, managing the construction and delivery of all scenic elements, automation, and special effects for productions, including budgeting, scheduling, staffing, and installation.
  • Develop engineering and construction solutions for production designs, focusing on automation, structural integrity, rigging, and material specifications.
  • Create and manage build schedules and cost estimates in partnership with the Assistant Technical Director and Lead Scenic Charge.
  • Supervise the production of technical drawings by the Assistant Technical Director for all scenic and properties needs.
  • Coordinate load-ins and participate in technical rehearsals and design meetings as directed.
  • Implement and uphold safety protocols within the Scenic Studios, conducting regular safety meetings and ensuring compliance with best practices.
  • Manage the scenic and paint staff, including overseeing timesheets, performance evaluations, and hiring processes.
  • Maintain production equipment and oversee facility repairs and compliance in collaboration with facility management.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure safe and efficient production transitions.
  • Provide regular updates to the Director of Production regarding departmental challenges and budgetary status.
  • Oversee inventory management for scenic materials.
  • Manage production budgets and ensure timely submission of financial documentation.
  • Collaborate with various departments for special events and facility rentals.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years in scene shop leadership, with experience in budgeting and hiring, or 3 years of leadership with an MFA in Technical Direction or a related field.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in leadership, recruitment, and staff development.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in theatrical carpentry and craftsmanship.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and capable of producing detailed construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of stage automation and rigging systems.
  • Familiarity with advanced fabrication techniques, including 3D printing and CNC.
  • Proficient in MS Office and Google Suite.
  • Ability to operate vehicles for transporting materials.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires on-site presence with physical demands including lifting up to 70 lbs, working at heights, and in confined spaces. Flexibility in scheduling, including evenings and weekends, is necessary.

Reports to: Director of Production
Supervises: Scenic Studios Staff and Technicians
Collaborates with: Production, Development, Education, and Rentals teams.
