Position Summary:
The Technical Director plays a pivotal role in ensuring the timely and cost-effective realization of scenic elements for various productions, including Main Stage, Family Series, Education, and special events. This position operates under the guidance of the Director of Production and collaborates closely with the Stage Operations Supervisor and Assistant Technical Director to facilitate efficient and safe scenery transitions. Responsibilities include overseeing the load-in and load-out processes, managing automation, and implementing special effects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Nowlin-Renaud Scenic Studios, ensuring the effective construction and delivery of all scenic elements, automation, and special effects for productions.
  • Develop engineering and construction strategies for production designs, focusing on automation, structural integrity, and material procurement.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Technical Director to create build schedules and budget estimates.
  • Supervise the execution of technical drawings for scenic, paint, and properties.
  • Facilitate load-ins and participate in technical rehearsals and design meetings as directed.
  • Implement and uphold safety protocols within the scenic studios, conducting regular safety meetings.
  • Manage the scenic and paint staff, including performance evaluations and staffing decisions.
  • Maintain production equipment and oversee facility repairs and compliance.
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure seamless and safe production transitions.
  • Provide regular updates to the Director of Production regarding departmental challenges and budgetary status.
  • Manage inventory systems for scenic materials.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of special events and facility rentals.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years in scene shop leadership or 3 years with an MFA in Technical Direction or a related field, emphasizing stage automation expertise.

  • Proficient in both independent and collaborative work environments.
  • Effective leadership and staff development skills.

Physical Requirements:
This role is based on-site and involves physical demands such as lifting up to 70 lbs, working at heights, and navigating confined spaces. A flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, is required.
