Position Overview

In alignment with the leadership of the Pharmacy Services Director, the Registered Oncology Pharmacist is responsible for delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care while collaborating with nursing staff in our Infusion Center, Hematology Oncology Unit, and Oncology Physician Practice. This role involves direct interaction with Hematology/Oncology Physicians, Infectious Disease Physicians, and their patients. The primary focus of the Oncology Pharmacist is to provide Clinical and Dispensing services tailored to the needs of our Hematology/Oncology practices and patients. Additionally, the Oncology Pharmacist may offer Staff Pharmacist and IV services as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Adhere to the established Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors of the organization.
  2. Implement the Pharmacy process to cater to the specific medication education, safety, and rights of oncology patients.
  3. Ensure compliance with age-specific medication education and safety protocols.
  4. Participate in Infection Control measures and Quality Improvement initiatives, demonstrating competency through adherence to established standards.
  5. Engage in a structured decision-making process, including recognition, data collection, and collaboration with the healthcare team.
  6. Exhibit punctuality and effective time management, ensuring productivity during low activity periods.
  7. Demonstrate commitment to professional development through participation in training and maintaining current licensure.
  8. Stay informed of relevant federal, state, and organizational regulations and policies.
  9. Accept accountability for competency standards and implement feedback for improvement.
  10. Maintain professionalism and cooperation in response to changes and assist peers effectively.
  11. Exhibit flexibility in staffing and assignments.
  12. Maintain a positive attitude and effectively resolve conflicts.
  13. Practice cost containment strategies.
  14. Comply with all organizational policies, including dress code and behavioral standards.
  15. Supervise Pharmacy Assistants as necessary.
  16. Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy program with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy.
  • Possession of a valid NYS Pharmacist license and current New York registration.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Completion of at least three (3) annual Continuing Education credits in Chemotherapy/Oncology.
  • Oncology Certification from NYSCHP or BPS, or an equivalent credential is preferred.
  • Experience in hematology oncology and infusion center operations is advantageous.
  • Successful completion of the Hospital and Departmental Orientation Program in accordance with policies.

Ability to establish effective communication by clearly defining expectations and actively listening to team members. Proficient in pharmaceutical calculations and maintaining professionalism under pressure. Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in decision-making.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Exposure to chemicals necessary for performing job functions, with access to Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal English.
  • Physical capability to remain stationary or ambulate for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity for computer tasks and ability to focus on detailed tasks despite interruptions.
  • Ability to lift and transport objects weighing over 30 lbs.
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods, even with distractions.
Patient Population Served:

Experience working with diverse populations, including neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, as well as those with exceptional communication needs or cultural considerations.
