Pharmaceutical Care Specialist in Oncology

In collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy Services, the Registered Oncology Pharmacist delivers comprehensive pharmaceutical care, engaging with the Infusion Center, Hematology Oncology Unit, and nursing staff within the Oncology Physician Practice. This role involves direct interaction with Hematology/Oncology Physicians, Infectious Disease Physicians, and their patients. The primary focus is on providing Clinical and Dispensing services tailored to the needs of Hematology/Oncology practices and patients. Additionally, the Oncology Pharmacist will offer Staff Pharmacist and IV services as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adhere to established Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
- Implement all facets of the Pharmacy process to address the specific needs of oncology patients, ensuring medication education, safety, and patient rights are integrated into practice.
- Monitor and apply Infection Control methods, actively participating in Performance Improvement and Risk Management initiatives.
- Engage in effective decision-making processes, including recognition, data collection, and resource utilization, while collaborating with the healthcare team.
- Demonstrate punctuality and effective time management, ensuring personal activities do not interfere with professional responsibilities.
- Commit to professional development through attendance at in-services and participation in projects, maintaining current licensure and enhancing knowledge in oncology.
- Stay informed about relevant federal, state, and institutional regulations, laws, and policies.
- Accept accountability for meeting competency standards and respond constructively to feedback.
- Exhibit professionalism and cooperation in response to changes and assist peers through effective communication.
- Maintain flexibility in staffing and adapt to varying assignments.
- Foster a positive work environment through constructive conflict resolution.
- Practice cost containment measures.
- Comply with all institutional policies, including dress code and behavioral standards.
- Supervise Pharmacy Assistants as needed.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy program with a minimum of a BS in Pharmacy.
- Current NYS Pharmacist license and registration.
- 2-3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
- Completion of at least three annual CE requirements in Chemotherapy/Oncology.
- Oncology Certification by NYSCHP or BPS, or equivalent, is preferred.
- Experience in hematology oncology and infusion center operations is advantageous.
- Successful completion of the Hospital and Departmental Orientation Program in accordance with institutional policies.
Ability to establish effective communication, perform pharmaceutical calculations, and act professionally as a role model. Demonstrates composure under stress and possesses strong problem-solving skills, exercising good judgment and decision-making capabilities.
Physical and Mental Demands:
- May encounter hazardous chemicals as part of job responsibilities.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal English.
- Physical capability to remain stationary or ambulate for extended periods.
- Requires manual dexterity for computer work and the ability to focus on tasks.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Must be able to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods, even with interruptions.
- Ability to perceive objects at varying distances and hear normal sounds amidst background noise.
- May involve exposure to chemotherapeutic agents, necessitating knowledge of Universal Precaution techniques.
- Must be capable of lifting and transporting objects weighing over 30 lbs.
Engagement with diverse patient populations, including but not limited to:
- Neonatal patients
- Patients with exceptional communication needs
- Pediatric and adolescent patients
- Adult and geriatric patients
- Patients at end of life
- Patients under isolation precautions
- Patients with cultural needs
