Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Director of Pharmacy Services, the Registered Oncology Pharmacist delivers comprehensive pharmaceutical care, collaborating closely with the Infusion Center, Hematology Oncology Unit, and nursing staff within the Oncology Physician Practice. This role involves direct interaction with Hematology/Oncology Physicians, Infectious Disease Physicians, and their patients. The primary focus of the Oncology Pharmacist is to provide Clinical and Dispensing services tailored to the needs of Hematology/Oncology practices and their patients. Additionally, the Oncology Pharmacist may offer Staff Pharmacist and IV services as required.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Adhere to established Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
  2. Implement all aspects of the Pharmacy process to cater to the specific medication education, safety, and rights of oncology patients.
  3. Address the age-specific needs of patients in medication education, safety, and rights within practice.
  4. Monitor Infection Control methods, participate in Performance Improvement and Risk Management programs, and demonstrate competency by meeting established standards.
  5. Engage in a structured decision-making process, including recognition, data collection, priority setting, resource utilization, and collaboration with the healthcare team.
  6. Exhibit punctuality, manage time effectively, and maintain a consistent performance level that prioritizes patient care.
  7. Show commitment through participation in in-services, projects, and personal development, while maintaining required licenses and enhancing oncology knowledge and skills.
  8. Stay informed about relevant federal, state, and hospital regulations, laws, and policies.
  9. Take responsibility for meeting competency standards and respond constructively to feedback.
  10. Maintain professionalism and cooperation in response to changes and assist peers through effective communication.
  11. Demonstrate flexibility in staffing and adapt to varying assignments.
  12. Maintain a positive demeanor and effectively resolve conflicts.
  13. Implement cost containment strategies.
  14. Comply with all hospital policies, dress codes, behavioral standards, and mandatory training requirements.
  15. Supervise Pharmacy Assistants as needed.
  16. Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy school with a minimum of a BS in Pharmacy.
  • Possession of a valid NYS Pharmacist license and current New York registration.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Completion of at least three (3) annual Continuing Education credits in Chemotherapy/Oncology.
  • Oncology Certification by NYSCHP or BPS or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience in hematology oncology and infusion center operations is advantageous.
  • Successful completion of the Hospital and Departmental Orientation Program in accordance with hospital and Pharmacy policies.

Physical and Mental Demands
  • May encounter chemicals necessary for performing tasks, with access to Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials.

  • Physical capability to remain stationary or ambulate for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity for computer work and the ability to focus and concentrate.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Capacity to concentrate on detailed tasks amidst interruptions.
  • Ability to perceive objects at varying distances and hear normal sounds amidst background noise.
  • Tasks may involve exposure to chemotherapeutic agents, necessitating knowledge of Universal Precautions.
  • Physical ability to transport objects weighing over 30 lbs.
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods and perform repetitive functions.
  • Capability to communicate effectively with customers and inspect deliveries for accuracy.
