Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy Services, the Registered Oncology Pharmacist is responsible for delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care in collaboration with the Infusion Center, Hematology Oncology Unit, and Oncology Physician Practice nursing teams.
This role involves direct interaction with Hematology/Oncology Physicians, Infectious Disease Physicians, and their patients. The Oncology Pharmacist's primary focus will be on providing Clinical and Dispensing services tailored to the needs of Hematology/Oncology practices and patients. Additionally, the Oncology Pharmacist will offer Staff Pharmacist and IV services as required.
Key Responsibilities
The Registered Pharmacist is tasked with reviewing medication orders against patient profiles in accordance with established hospital and pharmacy policies and standards. Responsibilities include:
- Adhering to WPH Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
- Implementing all aspects of the Pharmacy process to address the specific medication education, safety, and rights of oncology patients.
- Monitoring Infection Control methods and participating in Performance Improvement and Risk Management programs.
- Utilizing effective decision-making processes, including data collection and resource utilization, while collaborating with the healthcare team.
- Demonstrating punctuality and effective time management to enhance pharmacy and patient services.
- Engaging in professional development through attendance at in-services and maintaining current licensure and knowledge in oncology.
- Staying informed of relevant federal, state, and WPH regulations and policies.
- Supervising Pharmacy Assistants and performing additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy, with a minimum of a BS in Pharmacy. A valid NYS Pharmacist license and current New York registration are required, along with at least three years of hospital pharmacy experience. A minimum of three annual Continuing Education credits must focus on Chemotherapy/Oncology. Oncology Certification by NYSCHP or BPS or equivalent is preferred, as is experience in hematology oncology and infusion center operations.
Core Competencies
The candidate should demonstrate strong communication skills, the ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations, and maintain professionalism in all interactions. Additionally, the ability to remain composed under stress and apply problem-solving skills is essential.
Physical and Mental Demands
The role may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals and requires the ability to remain stationary for extended periods, perform detailed tasks, and communicate effectively with both internal and external customers.
Patient Population Served
This position will involve interaction with various patient demographics, including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
