Job Summary

The City of Salem is in search of a Project Leader in Engineering

Role Overview:
The City of Salem is on the lookout for a Project Leader within the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Opportunities abound in the Engineering Division, tailored to your expertise and capabilities. Within our transportation team, the focus is on enhancing roadways, traffic management systems, lighting, and facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. The public utilities team concentrates on advancing the City’s water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. The ideal candidate will possess experience in the design and execution of municipal infrastructure initiatives.

The Project Leader role encompasses civil engineering project oversight throughout the phases of planning, design, and construction of municipal infrastructure projects. The selected individual will either take on the design responsibilities or review and endorse the designs produced by other team members or consultants.

Professional Development:
The City’s project delivery approach is designed to provide entry-level engineers with project management exposure while enabling senior engineers to enhance their technical expertise. This is achieved by involving engineers at all levels in project management roles, allowing all project leaders to take charge of design development and construction oversight for both in-house and consultant-led projects.

With a diverse array of projects, stable funding avenues, and a clear pathway for professional growth, the opportunities are extensive. We are committed to fostering and guiding professional development within our organization.

A Unique Opportunity:
Recent retirements, promotions, and the approval of a significant Community Improvement Bond Measure have opened up exciting career prospects within our collaborative team dedicated to serving our community.

What We Offer:
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your family.
  • A supportive environment promoting a healthy work/life balance:
    • Hybrid work schedule with in-office and remote work options.
    • Flexible working hours (e.g., 9-hour days with every other Friday off).
    • Standard Monday through Friday work schedule.
    • 40-hour work week with occasional overtime requirements.
    • 11 paid holidays plus 2 floating holidays annually.
    • Accrual of vacation and sick leave each month.
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Employer contributions to retirement plans.
  • Options for pre-tax contributions to retirement accounts.
  • Flexible spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care.
  • Employee wellness and assistance programs.
  • Access to an employee health clinic.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of four years of licensed professional engineering experience in a relevant field.
  • Professional Civil Engineer License in the State of Oregon required within the first year of employment.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Valid driver’s license and compliance with the City’s driving standards.
About Us:
The Engineering Division is tasked with executing the 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan and is actively engaged in a variety of capital improvement projects, including water treatment facilities, wastewater systems, drainage solutions, parks, and urban development initiatives. The recent Community Improvement Bond will significantly enhance our capacity to undertake projects over the next decade.

The Public Works Department values its employees and their professional growth. If you are passionate about collaborating on innovative solutions and responding proactively to community needs, we look forward to connecting with you. The City of Salem is committed to maintaining a healthy work-life balance while ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of our community.
