Job Summary

We're seeking an experienced software development professional to join our team as a Software Development Manager. As a key member of our engineering team, you'll oversee large-scale projects end-to-end, driving technical innovation and ongoing improvements for our deployed features.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and test Gusto's product suite, spanning across payroll, benefits, HR, time, tax credits, and more.
  • Lead other engineers to innovate on complex technical problems in large-scale domains.
  • Drive the scaling of one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world.
  • Own cross-functional alignment with product management, design, and business teams to understand customer pain points, develop solutions, and prototype, iterate, and launch daily.
  • Build a product that our customers genuinely love.

Requirements

  • Successful applicants will typically have at least 12+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Experience leading the innovation of customer-facing products and technical management of large projects end-to-end.
  • Drive the quality of writing, testing, and debugging code for highly reliable production systems at scale.
  • Advanced data modeling skills and hands-on building well-structured, easily maintainable, well-documented code.
  • Passion for creating memorable experiences for customers.
  • Expertise in complex product development problems, including Rails and React.
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
  • Experience in HR, payroll, payments, fintech, or tax products, AI/Machine Learning, or API development is a plus.

Compensation

The cash compensation for this role is targeted at $193,000/yr to $231,000/yr in Denver and most remote locations, and $228,000/yr to $272,000/yr for San Francisco, New York, and Seattle. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise.

Work Environment

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days, approximately 2-3 days per week. The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
