Job Summary and Qualifications

The


Surgical Technologist (Labor and Delivery), in collaboration with the surgical team and under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, is responsible for the care and safety of the perioperative patient, as well as the management of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment during surgical and other invasive and non-invasive procedures.

The Surgical Technologist ensures effective communication with the circulator, the surgeon, the patient and their family, along with other members of the surgical team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and manage instruments, equipment, and supplies for all surgical procedures
  • Maintain a sterile field while passing instrumentation during invasive procedures
  • Conduct appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed
  • Assist in patient positioning, transportation, and acquiring necessary equipment
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Prepare the room for the next patient

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program or completion of the Operating Room Specialist Course from the Military is required
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is required in South Carolina hospitals and is strongly preferred in Georgia and Florida hospitals
  • A current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider certification is required
  • One to two years of operating room experience is preferred
