Beam Transport Systems Engineer

Overview:
We are in search of a Project Engineer dedicated to the design and integration of beam transport line subsystems for a significant project. This role is situated within the Accelerator Systems division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
This project is a multi-billion dollar initiative led by the Department of Energy, aimed at establishing advanced capabilities for material studies through neutron scattering. It will serve a diverse user base from various scientific and industrial sectors. The new facility will enhance the existing neutron scattering capabilities and ensure continued leadership in this field for years to come.
The Accelerator Systems team is tasked with the comprehensive design, manufacturing, installation, and testing of all necessary hardware to effectively transport a high-power proton beam to a rotating target, generating multiple beams of moderated neutrons.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to create detailed design packages for beamline assemblies and components.
- Lead design reviews and facilitate peer evaluations of design work.
- Prepare, track, and manage various project documentation, including:
- Interface control documents outlining the connections between the Accelerator Systems and conventional facilities.
- Requirements definition documents.
- Design and Analysis Calculations (DACs).
- Fabrication drawings.
- Technical Specifications.
- Design Failure Modes & Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) and Fault Trees.
- Statements of Work.
- Installation Plans.
- Test Plans.
- Ensure timely delivery of assigned work packages in accordance with project timelines.
- Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance (QA) standards.
- Work closely with operational teams to ensure all operational requirements are met.
- Maintain traceability between operational needs, accelerator specifications, design features, and verification test plans.
- Ensure procurement scopes are technically sound and aligned with budget and schedule.
- Oversee equipment procurement contracts to guarantee timely delivery.
- Foster strong relationships with project stakeholders, including managers, vendors, and support organizations.
- Represent the project at reviews, conferences, and workshops.
- Support ORNL's mission by aligning actions with core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service, while promoting a respectful and inclusive workplace.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Proficient in CAD software such as Creo/Pro-E, Solidworks, or AutoCAD.
- Solid understanding of GD&T and drafting standards.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Experience in guiding designers in producing engineering drawings and reviewing outputs.
- Proficiency in Creo CAD software.
- Skilled in creating technical specifications and statements of work.
- Experience in collaborating with vendors for custom equipment procurement.
- Familiarity with the installation and testing of complex systems.
- Demonstrated project management capabilities.
- Adept at quickly analyzing and prioritizing complex technical challenges.
