Position Overview

The role is integral to the Fire Protection team, focusing on the design of systems within various Department of Energy facilities.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in the design of fire protection systems and will be adept at creating design documentation, such as piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, that adhere to relevant design criteria.

The candidate should have a solid understanding of the International Building Code (IBC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, including but not limited to NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 801, NFPA 101, and NFPA 241.

You will collaborate and coordinate with other engineering and construction disciplines as well as clients in the design and implementation of these systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support project requirements for design, design review, commissioning, testing, code interpretations, and site assessments as necessary to meet project timelines.
  • Independently apply fire safety principles in the development of structures, systems, and components.
  • Develop acceptance protocols for fire protection systems.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders as needed for the design, installation, and testing of fire protection systems.
  • Assist in the development of fire protection components for authorization basis documents and other safety submissions.
  • Facilitate reviews by the Department of Energy (DOE) and external regulatory agencies concerning the fire protection aspects of design and installation.
  • Work with management and multidisciplinary design teams to provide guidance, feedback, and validation of engineering and design efforts.
  • Conduct fire protection reviews to ensure compliance with applicable DOE orders, NFPA standards, and model building codes.
  • Offer technical guidance in the development of fire protection equivalencies to DOE standards and NFPA codes and standards.
  • Support fire protection subcontractors for fire sprinkler installation and fire detection and alarm systems.
  • Ensure alignment of fire protection systems design and installation with upper-tier requirements identified in Authorization Basis Documents, facility Fire Hazards Analysis documents, and Engineering Basis of Design documents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and hold an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certificate.
  • Familiarity with fire, life safety, and building codes, including UL and FM.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
