Overview:

We are in search of a Project Engineer dedicated to the design and integration of beam transport line sub-systems for a significant project within the Accelerator Systems group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This role is pivotal in the development of the Second Target Station (STS) project, a $2 billion initiative under the Department of Energy.

The STS aims to enhance capabilities for the investigation of various materials through neutron scattering, supporting a vast array of users from diverse scientific and industrial fields. The instrument suite at the STS will provide unique scientific capabilities that will complement existing neutron scattering facilities at ORNL, ensuring continued leadership in this field for years to come.

The Accelerator Systems group is tasked with the design, fabrication, installation, and testing of essential hardware to transport a 700 kW, 15 Hz proton beam to a rotating tungsten target, generating approximately 22 beams of moderated neutrons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Accelerator Systems engineers and designers to create beamline assembly and component design packages as assigned.
  • Lead and engage in design reviews, ensuring thorough peer evaluation of designs within the defined scope.
  • Draft, monitor, review, and manage various project documentation, including:
    • Interface control documents detailing interactions between the assigned Accelerator Systems scope and conventional facilities, as well as integrated control systems.
    • Requirements definition documents.
    • Design and Analysis Calculations (DACs).
    • Fabrication drawings.
    • Technical Specifications.
    • Design Failure Modes & Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) and Fault Trees.
    • Statements of Work.
    • Installation Plans.
    • Test Plans.
  • Deliver assigned work packages in alignment with project timelines.
  • Ensure adherence to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance (QA) standards.
  • Collaborate with Neutron Science Directorate (NScD) operations to capture operational requirements effectively.
  • Maintain traceability between operational requirements, accelerator specifications, design features, and verification test plans.
  • Ensure technical completeness of project procurement scopes, integrating cost and schedule considerations.
  • Manage procurement contracts for assigned equipment, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Foster strong working relationships across the project with Control Account Managers, line managers, vendors, and project support organizations, including ES&H, QA, procurement, and human resources.
  • Represent the STS Project by participating in and presenting project information at various reviews, conferences, and workshops.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient in CAD software such as Creo/Pro-E, Solidworks, and AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and drafting standards.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in directing designers in the creation of engineering drawings and reviewing designer outputs.
  • Proficient in Creo CAD software.
  • Experienced in developing technical specifications and statements of work.
  • Background in collaborating with vendors for custom equipment procurement.
  • Experience in the installation and testing of complex equipment.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities.
  • Proven ability to quickly understand, prioritize, and analyze complex technical challenges.
