Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking dedicated Highway Maintenance Technicians to enhance our maintenance workforce. As a qualified candidate, your role will include:

• Collaborating with a team to manage drainage systems, eliminate debris, trim vegetation, and conduct roadway upkeep.

• Operating various machinery, including but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, and mowing tractors.

• Utilizing hand and power tools while performing physical labor tasks.

• Responding to emergencies that obstruct roadways, such as traffic incidents and debris, to ensure traffic control and facilitate road reopening. During adverse weather conditions, you will prepare for and operate equipment to clear snow and ice, in addition to working under other hazardous weather circumstances affecting road safety. Emergency response may necessitate work outside of standard business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Establishing work zones and implementing traffic control measures, with a strong emphasis on site safety. Safety is our utmost priority, and you are encouraged to identify potential workplace hazards and propose enhancements.

Minimum Qualifications


• Experience in roadway maintenance or construction

• Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, and procedures relevant to roadway maintenance or construction

• Proficiency in operating machinery such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, and backhoes

• Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions

• Capacity to perform strenuous manual labor, including frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds

• Competence in using hand and power tools

• A valid driver's license is required upon hire

• A Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical certification must be obtained within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter. Assistance with enrollment and payment for a CDL course will be provided.

• Familiarity with safety policies, procedures, and programs.

• Capability to acquire flagger and work zone certifications.

Additional Considerations


• Valid CDL with necessary endorsements at the time of hire

• Experience in operating heavy machinery

• Background in preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs

• Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storm response, and accident clean-up

• Proficiency in heavy equipment operation
