Job Summary
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Technician to join their maintenance team. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the highway maintenance system.
Key Responsibilities
- Clear drainage, remove debris, cut brush, and perform roadway maintenance tasks as part of a team.
- Operate a variety of equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, and mowing tractors.
- Use hand and power tools, and perform manual labor tasks as required.
- Respond to emergencies, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road.
- Prepare for and operate equipment to remove snow and ice during severe weather, and work in other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions.
- Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection and safety.
Requirements
- Experience in roadway maintenance or construction.
- Possess knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction.
- Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoes, etc.
- Able to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Skilled in using hand and power tools.
- Valid driver's license required at hire.
- A Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.
- Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications.
Additional Considerations
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements at time of hire.
- Experience in heavy equipment operation.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident response and clean-up.
