Job Overview

Position Summary

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will deliver technical expertise and assistance regarding the planning, upkeep, troubleshooting, project execution, and installation of all mechanical systems within the facility. This role encompasses the formulation and execution of a thorough Reliability Centered Maintenance strategy that aligns with the achievement of organizational goals, objectives, and key performance indicators.

This position serves as a mentorship and leadership role, contributing to a collective effort to establish and execute policies and plans, which may include budget considerations, Health, Safety, Security & Environmental (HSSE) matters, and the organizational and cultural development of the Engineering Department, along with other facets of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with peers in organizational HSSE initiatives, striving for continuous improvement in workplace safety.
  • Develop and execute maintenance engineering tasks to ensure the reliability and availability of both static and rotating equipment throughout their lifecycle.
  • Provide technical oversight and monitoring of all critical fixed mechanical assets in operational facilities.
  • Act as a technical liaison for mechanical integrity inspections of fixed equipment.
  • Monitor and report on the performance and reliability of fixed equipment through key performance indicators to enhance operational efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Offer technical support for projects, including large-scale expansions, capital projects, and modifications.
  • Ensure that capital and operational projects are conducted safely, within budget, and according to established timelines and quality standards.
  • Participate in and occasionally lead pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including witnessing equipment installations.
  • Facilitate discussions regarding engineering solutions to routine maintenance challenges.
  • Diagnose equipment-related issues and efficiency problems.
  • Review reports generated by engineers and assist them in completing tasks and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • Analyze plant equipment operating parameters and initiate technical discussions with operations to optimize performance.
  • Lead assessments following plant trips to determine root causes and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Ensure that equipment history records are accurately maintained, including downtime, cause codes, priority codes, labor hours, materials used, and incurred costs.
  • Review and suggest changes to the annual maintenance program and equipment audits to enhance future initiatives.
  • Implement approved reliability and plant improvement projects within budget and on schedule.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to contribute to the development and execution of long-term planning programs for equipment, including end-of-life and repair or replacement decisions.
  • Identify potential plant threats through Condition Monitoring programs and trend analysis.
  • Generate reliability reports based on completed inspections.
  • Conduct diagnostic inspections and troubleshooting on plant equipment.
  • Support turnaround jobs while adhering to safety, quality, schedule, and budget constraints.
  • Oversee quality assurance and quality control for off-site repairs and rebuilds.
  • Maintain a professional image in all interactions with clients and vendors, upholding the company's positive reputation.
  • Adhere to all relevant company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications

  • Preferred certifications include API 510, API 570, API 653, API 580, CMRP, CRE, and CRL.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a process plant environment is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of static and rotating equipment, as well as maintenance and reliability engineering, is essential.
  • Familiarity with Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements is preferred.
  • Experience in Project Management is preferred.
  • Experience in leading teams is preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, is required.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods is required.
  • Effective communication through various means is required.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office environment, utilizing office equipment such as computers, telephones, and copiers.
  • Fieldwork may be required in extreme weather conditions.
  • Noise levels are typically moderate but may increase during field activities.

Work Schedule

  • Regular 40-hour work week, with normal duty hours assigned.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary based on job demands.
  • Extended hours may be required to meet deadlines or support facility emergencies.

Travel Requirements

  • Travel may be required up to 25% of the time.
