Position Summary
The Principal Mechanical Engineer will leverage technical expertise to support the planning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation of all mechanical systems within the facility. This role involves the creation and execution of a comprehensive Reliability Centered Maintenance strategy that aligns with the plant's objectives and performance metrics. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in evaluating mechanical integrity, quality assurance, and quality control related to equipment repairs and contractor work.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with peers in Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) initiatives to enhance workplace safety.
- Design and implement maintenance engineering strategies to ensure the reliability of both static and rotating equipment throughout all phases, including design, fabrication, installation, and start-up.
- Oversee and monitor critical fixed mechanical assets within the operational facilities, including piping and structural components.
- Act as the mechanical integrity liaison for fixed equipment inspections.
- Track and report on equipment performance and reliability using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Provide technical guidance for projects, including large-scale expansions and modifications.
- Ensure that capital and operational projects are executed safely, within budget, and on schedule, adhering to procurement policies.
- Participate in and occasionally lead pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including equipment installation oversight.
- Facilitate discussions on engineering solutions for routine maintenance challenges.
- Diagnose and resolve equipment efficiency issues.
- Review engineering reports and assist in troubleshooting activities.
- Mentor junior engineers to foster professional development.
- Analyze plant equipment operating parameters and engage in technical discussions with operations for optimal performance.
- Lead assessments to determine root causes of plant trips and provide actionable recommendations.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment history, including downtime, cause codes, and costs.
- Review and recommend adjustments to annual maintenance programs and equipment audits for continuous improvement.
- Implement approved reliability and plant enhancement projects within budget and timelines.
- Serve as an SME in developing long-term planning programs for equipment lifecycle management.
- Identify potential plant threats through Condition Monitoring programs and trend analysis.
- Generate reliability reports based on inspection outcomes.
- Conduct diagnostic inspections and troubleshooting of plant equipment.
- Support turnaround projects while adhering to safety, quality, and budget standards.
- Ensure quality assurance and quality control for off-site repairs and rebuilds.
- Maintain a professional image and positive reputation for the company when interacting with clients and vendors.
- Adhere to all relevant company policies and procedures.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Licenses and Certifications: Preferred certifications include API 510, API 570, API 653, API 580, CMRP, CRE, and CRL.
- Education and Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required, along with a minimum of seven years of experience in a process plant environment. Extensive knowledge of static and rotating equipment, maintenance, and reliability engineering is essential.
- Special Skills: Familiarity with Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS), Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements, and Project Management principles is preferred. Experience in team leadership is also advantageous.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
- Prolonged periods of sitting may be required.
- Effective communication skills are necessary.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in both office and field environments, with exposure to various weather conditions.
- Noise levels may vary, typically moderate but potentially elevated during field activities.
Travel Requirements
- Travel may be required up to 25% of the time.
