EMPLOYMENT DETAILS

  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (typical hours are 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM), with occasional evenings and weekends as required.

  • Work Location: Shepherd's Door, a dedicated facility for women and children.

FACILITY DESCRIPTION

Shepherd's Door, a program of the Portland Rescue Mission, is situated in a serene environment in East Portland, specifically designed to aid the transformation and growth of women and their children affected by homelessness and addiction. This expansive facility can accommodate 42 adults and 25 children, providing a nurturing atmosphere for children (birth to age 10) of mothers participating in the year-long New Life program.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Children's Center Assistant will collaborate with the Children's Center Teachers to establish a Christ-centered, educational atmosphere for up to 25 children (birth to age 10), enhancing their social, language, and motor skills that may be hindered by environmental challenges. Employing trauma-informed educational practices, this role will engage with mothers, children, volunteers, and community resources to facilitate the children's educational, emotional, and spiritual development. Key focuses include:

  • Ensuring children residing at Shepherd's Door feel loved and cared for while their mothers are actively engaged in their programs.
  • Supporting Lead Teachers in concentrating on children and curriculum delivery, while the Assistant addresses other classroom needs.
  • Consistently meeting children's basic needs, including diapering, feeding, and participating in activities that foster trust and healing.
  • Providing support to Portland Rescue Mission staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative classroom environment.
  • Encouraging mothers and children through Godly teachings and a nurturing environment, aiding their transition to healthy communities.
  • Modeling Christ-centered parenting to mothers, some of whom may have experienced trauma or homelessness.
  • Sharing the Gospel with women and children through Bible lessons, worship, and open discussions.
  • Inviting women and children into a relationship with Jesus Christ and guiding them in their spiritual growth.
  • Creating a joyful atmosphere that promotes a playful and Christlike lifestyle for families.
  • Maintaining an organized, clean, and vibrant classroom and playground setting.
  • Taking responsibility for various areas within the Children's Center.
