Position Overview

INTRODUCTION

The Portland Rescue Mission is in search of a Children's Center Assistant. This dedicated individual will possess a friendly demeanor, an innate ability to engage with children, and a vibrant energy that fosters trust, development, and learning for all.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS

  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (typical hours are 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM), with occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.

FACILITY DESCRIPTION

The Children's Center, part of the Portland Rescue Mission's women and children's facility, is designed to create a nurturing environment in East Portland. This facility is dedicated to supporting the transformation and growth of women and their children affected by homelessness and addiction, accommodating both adults and children.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Children's Center Assistant will collaborate with the Children's Center Teachers to establish a Christ-centered, educational atmosphere for up to 25 children (birth to age 10). This role will focus on enhancing social, language, and motor skills that may be hindered by environmental challenges. By employing trauma-informed practices, the assistant will work alongside mothers, children, volunteers, and community resources to promote educational, emotional, and spiritual development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure children residing at the facility are loved and cared for while their mothers engage in their programs.
  • Support Lead Teachers in concentrating on children and curriculum delivery, while addressing other classroom needs.
  • Attend to children's basic needs, including diapering, feeding, and engaging in activities that foster trust and healing.
  • Provide support to staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative classroom environment.
  • Encourage mothers and children through Godly teaching and a nurturing atmosphere, facilitating their transition to healthy communities.
  • Model Christ-centered parenting practices to mothers, some of whom may have experienced trauma or homelessness.
  • Share the Gospel with women and children through lessons, worship, and open discussions.
  • Invite families into a relationship with Jesus Christ and guide them in their spiritual growth.
  • Promote a joyful and playful lifestyle for families at the facility.
  • Maintain a well-organized, clean, and vibrant classroom and playground.
  • Take responsibility for various aspects of the Children's Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to spiritual growth.

  • Ability to engage physically with children and manage various tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with Mac and Microsoft Windows software.
  • Capability to lift at least 50 lbs. and engage with children on the floor.
